I'm sorry to hear about your adventure, but I wouldn't discount a prey response quite yet. I've heard stories about GSPs and Weims living with a cat perfectly fine for a couple years then suddenly nailing it. He sounds like a young dog at the 'testing limits' stage so he could be unfortunately expanding his horizons beyond just cat-chasing and onto cat-catching.... you've probably been encouraging his bird chasing adventures after all, so his natural instincts have been whetted for going after stuff that moves. And if he's running around the house growling with the cat in his mouth, especially at the other (older) dogs, it could be a "hey- the prize is MINE" thing rather than overt agression.
It's a sad episode, and there could certainly be other agression issues you're dealing with, but this honestly doesn't sound abnormal for a young GSP. |

| I think if he was trying to kill the cat it would be dead. IME, it is a very quick thing. Mine are rasied with the house cats and are fine with them, let them sleep with them and on them, but, if they find one while we are hunting, or if a feral cat shows up, well, they don't stay long. My dog Jess likes to carry things, and when the cats were young he would sometimes carry them around, never hurt them though. Unless you are sure he was playing I wouldn't leave them alone together if you value the cat. |

| Ace, I think your cat's head in the mouth GSP is nothing to fear as Trey is right if he was trying to kill the cat, the cat would be dead. As I know any critter that ends in Rocky's mouth is dead within 2 seconds. (mouse, Squrirrel, possum ect.) Sad to say Cat sharp Rocky was not raised with cats. We don't need a cat as Rocky has taken care of all the unlucky rodents that used to live in his yard!!! At first I credited my neighbors out door cat for the dead rodents I would find in our fenced backyard, until one day I saw Rocky in action!! Some GSP are great around rodents and cats and other GSPs like Rocky are not. |

My girls were both raised with two cats and get along with our cats no problem. Outside they go after and sometimes catch the doves, opossums, and squirrels. My youngest also catchs rats. Needless to say the doves, opossums, squirrels and rats don't last but a second once they have them.
The other day our neighbors cat came in our backyard and I was surpirsed that both dogs got after her. She was lucky as she was close to the fence when they saw her and she was able to escape. I am certain that if they had caught her she would be gone. We told our neighbors not to let her come in our yard. Anyway, it seems with my two that they know the difference between their family (the cats, and also a cockatiel) and the rest of the critters out there.
I also agree that if a GSP really is after a critter, that critter doesn't stand a chance. The Germans claim that pound for pound they are the strongest dog. I believe it too.

| Wow Texas Belle, that is sooo interesting your girls are great with the house family 2 cats, but could be a danger to a visiting neighbors cat!!! Reason I say that is because our Chese/lab Snickers loved cats and cats loved her. We never had a cat, but all the cats in the neighborhood would come up on our front yard and curl up to Snickers as she would sunbathe. It would crack up all the neighbors and make them smile. Well cats curling up to Snickers in our front yard ended immediately on Rocky's adoption date!!!! |

In our house the cats rule Bogart. He won't even come up to the second floor now since he knows one of them is always at the top of the stairs. This is fine with us, since we don't have to have the gate up anymore. Occassionally, he'll go on point and start stalking them, but they are much fast in a dead-start sprint than he is, and they've got a lot of hiding places |

During our dog play time this morning I shared with one of my friends Ace's GSP having the head of family cat in his mouth and did not kill the family cat. She told me that puppies in a litter develope and learn after 6 weeks old BITING INHIBITION!!! That is they learn how hard to crunch down without hurting or killing the other pup. One reason to keep the litter together for at least 8 weeks.. So Ace's GSP did great at "biting inhibition" with the family cat and learned it well in his litter |

I wasn't here to see it but I am wondering if maybe her cat swatted him or something. He has been a bit crabby even towards Hunter. Especially if he has a bone or is guarding the last bit of food in a dish. They all eat together and switch from dish to dish so I know that isn't a problem. He is the lowest one on the totem pole of the dogs. Doddi puts him into submission every time they get in a scuffle. I was just wondering if this would pose a future threat. Will neutering stop it? I don't think he wanted to kill the cat either because I watched him snag a red squirrel out of a hole in my apple tree the other day and it was instantly dead. I was actually amazed as he is usually afraid of everything. He now actively pursues any bird in the yard and goes right after the pigeons now. VERY HAPPY about that. My wife does not like him to begin with so the cat incident is making him more unwelcome with her. He is the sweetest little loving boy. He want you to love him and pet him all the time. I don't know where that came from with the cat though? |
