You let him go with his dignity attached, that's all anyone can ask of a friend, and you were most definitely his friend. I've made this decision too many times to want to remember, and each time they took a bit of me with them, but each time I knew in my head, and in my heart that it was time to let them go. You did the best thing for him today, even if your heart is breaking and the tears won't stop flowing.
God Bless, and rest in peace sweet old boy, romp with the ones who have gone before you.

So sorry for your loss. It's never easy to let them go. This hit me really hard as my old girl at almost 13 years is having trouble getting around and falling occasionally as well. It will be hard to let her go....

Sorry for the loss...but it is so amazing how connected at times our dog friends can be to us...he knew you were struggling with the decision and wanted to make the right one and he did let you know so you can be at peace with it...

Followed this post while at work this weekend, and I unfortunately was unable to respond until now. My heart was aching for you and your family and like others, I shed tears for you and Roscoe. Almost a year ago, we lost our almost 14 year old. I understand your loss, and remember the rawness of grief, and the hole his passing left in our hearts. That said, my thoughts and prayers are with you and all who knew and loved your beloved companion. It may be hard to believe now, but the time will come when your pain is replaced with many happy memories. May time heal your pain, and may God watch over Roscoe until you meet again at the Rainbow Bridge.

Unfortunately, grief is the price that we pay to have these wonderful creatures in our lives.

So so very sorry for your loss. I have no advice or words that'll bring any comfort except that i'm sure we're all thinking of you at this time. I haven't had to deal with this yet, but even the thought of losing my boy brings me to tears.

Just try to remember all the good and fun times you had together, remember him in his prime.

I was going to say to be there at the end, even if it is hard. If the vet does it right, they just go to sleep. That was how my old Moon girl went, her head on my leg, she just went to sleep.
And, of course, dogs do go to heaven. They are God spelled backwards. Where else would they go?
Also, just think of all the fun times Rosco had in life. Not all dogs get that. Some are abused or die young in a shelter for lack of a master to adopt them. Not Rosco!
But you still miss them.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, I feel underserving of the amount kindness.. I originally struggled for months with trying to decide when to put him down.. In the end the choice became pefectly clear, and there was no other.. Once I looked into his eyes on Saturday morning I knew then it was time..... Thanks again..

dgr -- you may not be ready for this yet, but when you are, this is a beautiful testament to the dogs in our lives... It's called God and Dog by Wendy Francisco.
