I got into GSPs because my roomate has a GSP/Blue Heeler mix. She is the sweetest dog I have ever met. Last year I decided the time was right for me to get a dog of my own. I wanted to get a dog like her that would be a great loyal companion and hiking partner. I also wanted to get into bird hunting as well. After researching and talking to some breeders I chose to get a GSP. I got my puppy last summer. Zeke can be a handful at times but he's loving and loyal and loves to hike with me wherever I go and is swift to learn. |

I almost didn't get into GSPS. I grew up with GSDS and Great Danes...always just loved the sleek muscular look of the Danes. Being an avid bird hunter, when I decided to get another dog (had a Lab, but wasn;'t much of a hunter), I wanted a pointing dog. Of the bird dogs, the GSP attracted me a lot with it's looks & versatility, got 2 locally, related but different litters. Both were awful, literally worst dogs I ever raised & I did rescue for years)not GSP, all breed/mutts/APBT). One was VERY aggressive, he got put down, later found out his sire was aggressive also. Other had Idiocy, would climb walls-literally, rougey in the field, rather run than hunt, never calmed down-horrible house dog. Worked with her for 16 mnths & got no where.(obedience, field, ran the daylights out of her, lots of birds, you name it!!) Started to look into field bred E Setters but really didn't want to mess with coat so I knuckled down, took the next 18 mnths researching kennels, going to HT's & finally found what I wanted, a DC bred GSP, I wanted to hunt and get back into the show ring -having had 2 that horribly disappointed me I was VERY cautious now. Then I got to meet 2 Rugerheim bred dogs & fell head over heels, purchased my Buck later that year & never looked back. 15 years later I have 5 of them now & couldn't be happier, so glad I did not give up my first choice of having a GSP!! |

Hi, I'm new(ish) and I am still quite new to the breed...still waiting for my first one! Just to introduce myself, I got into showdogs in 2000 with a sussex spaniel. Unfortunately, due to some health issues, he was put to sleep at a young age, but he was a pretty dog, and he was pointed. I also took him to some hunting "lessons" and it was SO fun. I was practically in tears seeing the beauty of a dog doing what he was bred to do. I then got into cavalier; I love sporting dogs, but my ex-husband's first dog (ever) was the sussex. He wanted an "easy" dog. Cavaliers are easy temperaments, but not for breeders (serious health issues.) I worked as a vet tech some time ago, and one of the partners at the practice had GSP's. My first meeting was my first day on the job. I had to walk through a back gate to get into the practice, and the two male GSPs were in the run. I put my hand on the latch, and they both jumped up RARARARARARAR!! I looked at them, and told them to knock it off, and they both looked at me like, "Oh, ok..." and moved back, and they sat down. I opened the gate (they didn't seem ferocious, just loud and alerting) and they just followed me to the door. The partner asked how I got in, and weren't there big dogs in the run? I said yes, I told them to be quiet, and they did. After that, I got to take care of them. And that was all she wrote...I fell in love. I still have three cavaliers, and they pretend they belong to the sporting group by bringing me dead critters like bunnies they killed in the yard (yes, really.) But now I'm divorced and I get to have whatever kind of dog I want. A dog-friend asked me to think about what dog I *really* felt like was me, because she didn't think I fit in with the toy group. I knew exactly what I wanted. I knew I had to have a dog that could hunt, was smart, low maintenance (I've had all the hair-dryinging I want to do with the spaniels), and that would come run and hike with me. I love training, and even trained one of my cavaliers to play the xylophone. So now I'm waiting for a dog. I'm talking to a breeder, but I also know if that doesn't work out, she'll help me get sorted out with one that will. I can't WAIT!! Yay! Patti |

| Patti - Welcome. I too had spaniels (cockers) before shorthairs and I got tired of the hair as well. Now I have 4 shorthairs. When do you think you will get your shorthair? I know you will never regret getting a shorthair. I never have and have now had them for 8 years. |

Bev, I'm not sure! In the next year or so, however it works out. I know from experience it's better to wait for the right dog than to rush into anything. BTW, I must have really had some bad feelings on the hair drying in my last post...dryinging...geez... My mom bought me my dryer as a christmas gift a few years ago. She asked me if I were going to use it to blow paint onto the house. I can't use it on high, or it WOULD blow my dogs off the table. What I am wondering is what I'll do with all of the extra room I'll have in my tack box....Surely I'll have to buy more crap to fill it up! |

| I am sure you will figure out a way to fill up your tack box. Good luck in your search. |
