Hi, I have been reading tate giving a dog plain yogurt with active cultures is good at preventing yeast infections.  But then there is conflicting advice saying that dairy is high on the allergy list of foods.

Windsor is on Taste of the Wild grain free.  He came off Nutro and his passing wind has stopped and he seems to be doing great with it (until the new whining episode) but he was on it for a while before the whining.

I am so confused about some of the things I read - Yogurt or no yogurt and how much of it to feed him?

Also to calm him down I got the Recovery Rescue.  He sleeps pretty quick after taking it but then lately got up howling.  I also read there is alcohol in it - is that true?  I can't find it anywhere on the the bottle where it says that but it's been written about on the internet.

Yogurt is ok to give if your dogs can tolerate it. Dairy is something that some dogs don't tolerate well. The active cultures could also be found in a probiotic supplement. The difference is that probiotics offer the active cultures without the dairy.

I give probiotics every once in a while if need be, more so when they were kibble fed. They are now raw fed and it really isn't necessary. So its really up to you. If he can tolerate the yogurt, thats great! I actually give Remi a frozen kong with yogurt a few times a week, he does fine with it. Its more or less just a treat while we are at work.

Not sure about the recovery rescue. I'm not familiar with it.

ETA: A good probiotic will have to be stored in the fridge. Look for something with at least 1 Billion active cultures. The difference between yogurt and probiotics is crazy when you compare active cultures. Wayyy more in the pill or powder itself.

Did you mean Rescue Remedy?  If so, the original formula has alcohol, but the Pet Rescue Remedy is alcohol free (see the product options at the link below).  Here is a link that shows ingredients and has more info.

As for yogurt, I feed plain yogurt (not fat free) frequently and when I do I usually put  a tablespoon dollop and mix it in with their food.  It is good for digestion, yeast infections, etc. and my dogs like it.  It will also put weight on the dogs if you have weight issues.

Thank you for that link!  I guess I got the right one and there is no alcohol in it - good - didn't want to give him any alcohol!

So how would I be able to tell if he is allergic to dairy?  Stool changes, behavioral changes?  I don't want him to get sick.  Where do I get the probiotic stuff for dogs?

I give all my guys yogurt, plain or fruit, never had a problem.
If he gets loose stools, itching starts, hives, some signs of intolerence to it.

His skin is very dry right now. I see the doggie dandruff when I brush him. I'm giving him Alaskan Salmon oil in his food right now. I'll lay off on everything but his normal food until his ears and skin clear up and then see. I also gave him Mane and Tail conditioner and he was really good and sat through it - like he liked it! Hasn't scratched since.

Mine get plain yogurt after any hard workout. They LOVE it. We actually give them the higher fat stuff, since they can burn it off :)

I've bought vanilla flavored by accident before, meaning to get plain. I use it up anyway, although the smell of vanilla plus meat or dog food is enough to make me barf

They think it's wonderful stuff...

Mine start out as babies with full fat plain yogurt dolloped on top of their food...that, cottage cheese, etc. No one has ever had a problem with it. The only time I've ever dabbled with probiotics is with my older girl after a gastropexy when she needed softer and smaller/more often meals. (Of course, this group also thinks of romaine lettuce as a treat (half the head split endwise is as good as a bone), carrots, etc. If your dog is on antibiotics for the ear infection, yogurt will help a lot in his return to a normal intestinal flora, etc...

A vet had reccomended yogurt once . Max was getting the Activia and I was getting the .45 cent store brand. But he's a good kid so he didn't mind sharing.

He loves the yogurt and so far so good! We have this really good pet shop in town. Been there for about a year - it's a small independently owned shop and the lady who owns it is WONDERFUL. If we buy 10 bags of food there, we get the 11th free. Her prices are good too. Plus she's got all sorts of interesting things that you don't find in the big chain stores. So I am becoming neurotic with this dog - I go to that store once a week to buy something. And she's so good at answering questions. She said to try the yogurt and the vet said for his dryness give him some canned food on top of his dry food. So we bought cans of Evanger's and it's all meat with no byproducts. So we got some chicken, beef and liver, etc. So we tried it last night and he liked it. And now he's got his yogurt and I give him some raw organic baby carrots here and there. I think his ear is clearing up - he's been calmer the last two days plus he had some good romps in the snow and his walks.

I can't help myself - my kids are grown and out of the house, I have empty nest syndrome and the hubby now works 2nd shift. He has really been company for me each night. I know I have to be careful and not overdo it though :)

Personally, I don't think you can overdo it in the spoiling category when it comes to shorthairs. The more you spoil the more they thrive. I don't have any kids and I lost my husband to cancer a couple of years ago. I don't know what I would have done without my shorthairs. They are the best. Keep on loving your boy.

Joce - I know Splat was joking. Meant my post to be in agreement, but re-read it and it didn't sound exactly like I intended. In any case, I agree with Splat completely.

Well he's getting spoiled worse. Since I quit smoking on Dec 28th all my ciggy money goes to the dog..... toys, toys, toys. But they are busy toys where I can interact with him - I so need that. This dog is really a savior. I used to crawl into a hole every Winter. Before we got Windsor, I'd come home from work, plop down on the couch and do pretty much nothing. Have a few beers, watch TV and go back and for between the couch and porch so I could smoke ciggies. Now? I quit smoking, I am out walking every evening. Walk more on the weekends and get to walk with my husband on gthe weekends, I'm running around playing hide and seek, playing tug of war, I'm getting back into shape and feel better. I look forward to coming home because I am not by myself anymore. :)

Funny how these dogs can change your life, and for the better too. Something about getting under our skin. I started out with one and now have 4 shorthairs.
