I t does look good. Halo's injury in the same area gave us problems. She started showing signs of infection and they had to reopen the wound and reclean. It did heal in the end, but was difficult.

Whatttt? You didn't stitch Katy up yourself Rob? Just fooling around, like you, I'd have made haste for the Vet and darned quick! That is NASTY looking!

I had my female Jane break through a slash pile on the 1st day of Grouse season years ago when she was just a babe and while she didn't do anything that looked that bad, she pierced her tongue with a stick, she pierced her ahemmmm...."Bird" with a stick and punched a hole in her left rear about 2" wide and all the way to the bone. A bloody mess was everywhere and she didn't want to stop hunting, so I closed up what I could as best as I could with vetwrap right there, broke my gun and put it in my gamebag and then carried her back to the truck. Yep, liked to of killed me, but all I could think was to get her to the Doc. She's now 13 years old and dreams of hunts past while snoozing on the couch.

I think she was just taking the whole "punk phase" a little bit far......lol

Here's a picture of the wound that we took today (day 19) while changing bandages.  I'm amazed at how good this looks not 3 weeks after the injury.

The open gap is getting ever so smaller- the skin underneath has granularized.  Lots of sutures were removed on Thursday at the Vet- the lower suture line looks amazing.  The shiny stuff is the gel we're using to help promote healing, it's called Colendula Gel.  It's a homeopathic substance & I swear by it at this point.

That does look amazingly well. Even the healed areas do not appear to be leaving bad scars. Where did you get the gel?

Thanks Rob!! I think I will go over to my local Whole Foods and get some. Sounds like something for the first aid kit for humans and dogs.

Is there proud flesh, especially on the lower edge of the wound?

Jdog, I'm not sure what you're asking........ when you say "lower edge", are you referring to as the picture is showing?  There are actually three separate suture lines that are slowing converging towards the triangle of open, granularizing skin tissue.

I'm not positive what you mean by the term "proud" either.  Do you mean skin that is at a higher level than the skin on the opposing side of the suture line?  If this is what you mean, the answer is no- at least not at this point.

"Proud flesh" is a laymen's term for the overgrowth of granulation tissue. On the last picture from January 22, it looked as if the granulation tissue might be heaped up over the skin edge just to the left of the knots from the two sutures. (the bottom of the triangle of open, granulating tissue).

The wound looks clean and has a healthy beefy color. No matter what you do, I'll bet it will heal nicely. Sometimes with proud flesh, it seems like it takes forever to heal. That's because healing takes place from the skin edges and when granulation tissue is heaped up over the edges, it is harder to heal. If that were the case, you might consider rolling a silver nitrate stick over the affected areas until it is gray and apply a dry dressing; repeat every 1 to 3 days until the proud flesh shows regression.

Katy's wound- day 28........ only 2 sutures left. The lower suture line has healed amazingly well. The tissue continues to granularize and the area of new tissue bed has actually shrunk in size as the sutured skin continues to heal. It was 4 weeks ago on Monday that I carried Katy 400 yards to my truck & then had a panic-stricken, 9 mile ride to the Vet.

Finally, my wife and I are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel !!

After 5+ weeks out of commission due to her injury, I'm happy to report that yesterday Katy ran for the first time off lead !!

She was down for about 20 minutes or so- moved well, given all the snow still on the ground & is no worse for the wear !!
