Ok....all this reading about different lines and pedigrees got me to take mine out and really look at it closely.  I know a lot about dogs, but not as much as I would like about lines breeding etc.  I feel as a dog owner I want to better understand these thinsg so I continue to know how to research my future pups etc. and know what I have.  I do not know too much about line breeding.  I looked at Jackson's pedigree and see that one dog actually appears twice on my dogs pedigree.   Once as his grandfather's, mother's father and once as his great great gradfather. The dog is the Hillhaven's Hustler (http://www.awesomegsps.com/hustler.htm)

It seems this would be the type of dog you would want to use in your line sto enhance the quality of teh breed but how do you know how to read your pedigree so that it is done correctly and not considered inbreeding?  I hate to sound ingnorant, but would love some clarification   Other than that dog I do not see any repeats on his line (some from the same breeder, but not that same dog)

Email your pedigree to me @ dottiesstars@yahoo.com & I will try to explain it to you as best as I can. It would be best if you also include a phone number with your email to me so I can call you & go over it in detail together.

Sounds like he is "linebred" on Hustler on the sire's side. Who's the breeder and Jackson's sire and dam?
I agree, reading pedigrees and COI's etc, can be a whole new language. :) Someone asked recently about a dog that had come into rescue and who others reading the thread thought he might be out of. After hanging in this for more years than I care to count , I have to agree that it is easy to pick out dogs out of certain lines. Really though, if those particular breeders have stayed within their own lines with only an occasional outcross or "nick" in the pedigree does that really happen. As an example I can look at my 3 1/2 year old Hero grandsons and see him in there...a different color "suit", but the same look, backskull, head, body type, and temperament. Another girl that I have is also a Hero granddaughter, but that breeding was outcrossed to another line and I see nothing of my own stuff in her. In the end the whole thing winds up being a tossup anyway...seems like.

Sounds like the Hustler is several generations back so it would be a "loose" linebreeding possibly. He was a popular Shorthair and appears in many, many pedigrees. Terra has Hustler 3 times in her 4 generation pedigree.
