Hi Meg, I'm looking to get into skijoring this year......any tips on what kind of skis are best??? I'm set as far as the dogs skijoring supplies, having a local sled dog company make them harnesses & getting the kit from them (Resha)...just not sure what skis are best???

Thanks much for any help!!!!!

Ann

PS The dogs handle well & are very well conditioned, hunted/run a lot, so no issues with them, now I may have endurance issues if it's tough on the human too though, LOL!!!

Talk to local XC people and see what they use, with a good lean towards stability over speed. I'd skip edges unless you're into some hard core backcountry stuff.

Also remember that you're ready to skijor with ONE dog on the flat when you can ski without a dog on hills. The last thing you want to do is hit the dog with skis!

Thanks!!!I'll have to see if there's any XC skiiers around, I don't know anyone personally and no one local into skijoring. And no hills anywhere I plan to go, can be some deep snow throughout the winter though. I have 4 dogs I want to train to do it, but plan on training them separately, 2 are big powerful males one of which has been heavily conditioned this year & is an absolute powerhouse.

Ann,

Cross country skiing is lots of fun but has a learning curve. I would strongly suggest you get your ski skills in good shape long before you tackle skijoring. What's your experience level with skiing? Downhill? Classic striding or skate cross country skiing? Are there places near you that you could take lessons? Our boys have been involved with cross country ski lessons since age four, and I'm amazed at what they've learned! Some good instruction would be valuable to you.
I like to cross country ski but have never skijored. I would bet that you'd need to have a rock-solid snowplow move for braking as well as consistent turning abilities. Like Meg said, if you can ski downhill in control, you are probably ready to skijor. Until that point, it may be a matter of the cart before the horse, er, dog...so to speak.

Yeah, XC skiing is definately at least as tough if not tougher than learning to ride a bike.... it took me a lot longer anyway! These days I've gotten to where I'm skate skiing on some rutted up snomobile routes, but that's mostly thanks to practicing for 30+ minutes most every weekday on my lunch hour last winter and this winter. It still kicks my butt fitness-wise but I can tell my balance and coordination skilz are getting better- such that they are.
