After 3 months, 3 anal flushes under anaesthetic with antibiotics packed into the glands and about 6 different courses of oral antibiotics (they were decided after cultures were grown from the pus both aerobically and anaerobically) Roo still has recurring infected glands and the vet says the only option left is removal as he can't risk the scarring/abscessing etc.

Anyone had this done as i really didn't want to go down this route due to the risk of fecal incontinence, just need some reassurance really

I had to have Belle's anal glands removed and have had no problems. Her glands were removed around 2 YO and she is now 7.5 YO. Just be sure you get a vet that has done this procedure and knows what they are doing. Ask your vet if he has done it before and what the results have been. If he has never done it before, find a vet that has done it. Thankfully, my vet had done the procedure quite a few times and was pretty much the go to vet for this procedure in my area. Good luck!!

Thanks TB, did Belle keep getting infections too then?

There are several vets at the practice, the one i'd use has done it a handful of times before and never with any problems, but they keep going on about the risks, which is quite scary is all!

Yes, Belle was having infections, but not quite as severe as the ones you described. I didn't want to get to that level, so opted to have the anal glands removed. They have to go over all the risks, but if he has done it before then just ask him how his previous patients are doing now. If they are ok, I wouldn't worry about it. The alternative is what you are going through now and it will probably get worse.
