We've had Remy now for 4 months. In case you're not familiar with our situation, we adopted Remy from an older woman who got Remy from her son. For some reason, the son and his family decided to get rid of their 2 dogs and Remy is NINE years old. I can't imagine raising a dog and having her for that long and then sending her off, but whatever. It worked out great for us!
I was amazed early on at how well she's been trained -- she knows all the standard commands and listens most of the time. We discovered about 6 weeks ago that she even knows how to roll over for a treat (but we don't do it often because I'm afraid she'll hurt her back).
I also figured out that she REALLY knows "wait." When I feed her, I make her sit and wait and she will wait until I say ok. I tried telling her to wait when I give her a treat and she will sit and wait and wait and wait -- even when the treat is right by her nose. Here she is waiting patiently (yes, for a piece of biscuit, but she gets very, very little people food).

So...she's not supposed to be on the couch, but we're having a hard time enforcing that because she looks so comfy when she's up there. Most of the time, she is content to sleep on her beanbag, but sometimes, she sneaks on the couch...and I'm horrible about telling her to get down. I figure at her age, she deserves to be spoiled a bit.
The other day, she was on the couch with my son and there was something she apparently liked inside the couch. This is what she did for a good 10 minutes...

Her head was buried into the cushions and her tail was going 100 miles a minute. I have no idea what she was after, but when she was done, she just went back to taking a nap.
I don't know what we'd do without Remy at this point! |

Remy is a cutie.
We let ours on the couch because otherwise we would have to sit on the floor to cuddle with them. They will leave on command though and lay elsewhere when told. |

I say the only thing holding them back from being perfect is their inability to make coffee. So nice ro hear a great story. You'll have to keep posting pictures and stories. Francine |

Thank you for giving this girl a great forever home. One day, if we get a bigger house (if the housing market ever turns around), I would like to do the same...adopt some senior gsp to live out their golden years without a worry in the world!

Thanks, everyone! I don't post a lot because, really, what is there to say? We don't do anything terribly exciting, but every single day, Remy puts a smile on my face with the stuff she does. I would HIGHLY recommend adopting an older dog to anyone. I'm not saying Remy doesn't have her issues, but I think somehow she appreciates being a member of our family. We're pretty sure that she was actually abused in the past because a few weeks ago, she had an accident in the kitchen. As soon as it happened, she crouched down in a little ball. I have never seen anything sadder! I didn't yell or say anything to her, just cleaned up. I wanted to tell her it was ok, but obviously didn't want her to think it's ok to pee in the kitchen. I worried that she had a UTI, but it seems that accident and the one the next day were caused by a stray cat hanging out in the back yard. The cat is not nice and I think Remy's afraid of her. She seems to have moved on, thank heavens. |

Good for you for adopting an older GSP! She sounds like a great addition to your family. As for the couch thing, isn't that why they call it "fur"niture? Seriously, though, a good snuggle on the couch with my GSPs is the best way to end a bad day (or even a great one!) so I bought washable covers for my couch to keep the fur to a minimum. |

Oh she's pretty. I hope you know are slogans around here: "we need more pictures" and "can't have just one." Glad to hear you are enjoying each other's company. |

I will have to take more pictures before I can post more because stupid me forgot to move my pictures folder to the network before my computer was rebuilt. I lost soooo many pictures! Unowhoandwhy...I totally agree that snuggling with Remy is a great way to end a day. Yesterday was a rough day all around so when it was bed time, I took my 2 little boys (3 years and 8 months) and Remy and we all snuggled on my bed. It's amazing how that can make almost everything right with the world. And now that we found out that my mom's dog is indeed going to have puppies, the puppy talk has started. We couldn't get one from that litter because they're all spoken for and I think we need more time to "prepare," but I think the desire is there. I can only hope that we could raise a puppy to be as good a dog as Remy. |
