Does anyone have any opinions on when to feed your dog on days he will be hunted or days he will be doing field work?  I have heard of some people not feeding them the morning of and just adding it to their evening meal.

Like I said before this all new to me and I want to make sure Graham is at his best when we go out on the field.  Thanks guys!

How old is Graham? That makes a difference, to me anyway. For our adult dogs, I feed one large meal a day after they've been back at camp for at least an hour and have rested and had good water intake. I feed their normal total daily intake plus a little bit and also add meat (chicken, tuna, etc) to both get them to finish their food (normally mine free-feed and are NOT motivated by food at all) and to add extra protein to their already hi-pro food during periods of heavy activity.

For younger dogs, I try to feed a little something in the morning so they have energy to go on. Depends on the age of the dog...

I feed mine a light meal a couple of hours before any heavy exertion like hunting or hiking. I then carry jerky that I can feed them if they need a boost. I use the jerky for people as I eat it too if I get hungry. Their main meal is at night and I give it to them after they have cooled down and rested, usually an hour or two after we are done working.  I also add a little extra to their evening meal by way of meats like chicken or fish, etc. This keeps them close to the normal feeding routine which is twice a day.

At 13 mos, he's still a baby. I would probably feed him about 1/4 of his normal daily intake right when you get up so he has a little time to digest it and hopefully not risk bloat. Then I'd probably feed him at least his whole normal daily intake at night, if not more. If you're going to be hunting more than a day or two, I would also supplement that night meal with extra protein. Every dog is different, it's not an exact science - more trial and error until you figure it out.

I feed about 1/2 the meal a few hours before - mainly b/c it's cold and there's snow and it takes a lot of energy to plow thru and hop thru snow. If the day was particularly rough I give a larger 2nd half.
They deserve it.

Mine are fed twice a day. So I feed them before a hunt in the morning as long as it is going to be over an hour before we hunt. The evening meal will usually be their whole daily intake if they have had a hard day, after they have been bathed and cooled down.

I never feed kibble prior to within 3 hrs, takes a long time to digest. I will give some raw hamburg or eggs, sardines prior, also will mix up some Impact for them(which they will get some during hunt). After a long day, they will get a bit extra in their meal.
Beware hard boiled eggs, GSPS and a long car ride.........

What is Impact?

Don't think mine will eat during a hunt, they usually won't even drink unless it is really warm out.

I will use neither sugar or honey, both will spike blood levels just as in humans, you get no long term effectiveness.

I normally feed my dogs a good sized meal in the morning and a smaller meal at night. Based on what I learned at a conference a while ago I feed half the normal morning ration in the morning and half at night on hunting days. On particularly tough hunts I'll give them a bit of a snack during the hunt.

Zodiak. I'm not sure what you are showing me. They look like good products was that it or were you trying to show me the impact of sugar on the blood? I'm not sure.

Thanks

Mike
