So after 3 litters, the oven is being turned off and the muffin-maker will have no more muffins. Shiraz goes under the knife tomorrow morning and will be back home by early afternoon (also getting her teeth cleaned, some dental x-rays and  possibly removing a cyst on her neck -- although some of this may be too much at once).

Any advice from those of you who have been through this? Anything we should have on hand to make her recovery more comfortable?

Joce,

She'll be subdued for at least tomorrow. I've had more trouble with lumps removed when one of girls was spayed than the actual spay. Just make sure Bo doesn't lick her incisions. Sometimes, the "cone" needs to go on the other dog!!

She will be fine. although a bit groggy, when she gets home. She may not want to eat and even if she does just feed her small amounts until she is out from under the drugs. By the next day you will be wondering if she was ever in the doggy hospital.

Ya ... I have a feeling the real challenge will be keeping her quiet. She throws hissy fits when my husband goes for runs without her. :D

Well, Raz spent the night in our room (and half of it in our bed). She was still a bit dopey this morning but seems much more mentall alert, albeit exhausted, now.

She ate his first meal about an hour ago and had her first pain meds around 10 am. No nausea or visible discomfort. Day two down, 12 more to go!

They are pretty tough & bounce back quickly. I may spay Tara next year as well, she's had 2 nice litters & I have a pup from both so don't foresee breeding her again as I don't want another pup from her.
Did they remove the cysts as well???

No -- I discussed it with the vet beforehand. She has had this one since we've had her and it hasn't changed at all. While they probably could have done it during the surgery, we agreed that we will just watch it and make sure it doesn't change.

Her x-rays show that she has some bone loss under one of her pre-molars that may throw up an abcess in the future. We could do that one as preventative, but may just do a wait and see on that as well. It isn't bothering her right now.

Still having trouble convincing her to eat -- I wonder if her teeth/gums are sore from having them cleaned (they are sparkly now :)). I've been smashing up her kibble and mixing it with yogurt and she seems to like that...

Glad to hear she made it out good...Hopefully she'll start eating better and it is just from sore gums from teeth cleaning...

Erk! The cone of shame is now on! She gave us a bit of a scare -- thought she had pulled a staple out, blood everywhere. Think she just pulled a little piece of skin that was loose. After we cleaned up the mess, couldn't see any extrastaple holes, or a missing staple. The cone is now on ... and she is UN.IM.PRESSED!

Well, she definitely seems to be on the road to recovery. I think she is feeling very sorry for herself, since she is sporting the cone of shame. Still seems more sleepy than usual, but eating and drinking is pretty normal.

Bo definitely doesn't get why his big sister doesn't want to play and is getting pretty fed up with her :D

They are both being very clingy (kept getting the cone bumped into the back of my leg while I was making dinner) and are both sleeping by me right now. I don't think they slept well last night since when we got up, Raz had her cone off (doesn't look like she did any damage but probably kept Bo up making lots of noise trying to get it off.

Day four down, 10 to go!

Razzie is now ready to roll --- think maybe a lethargic dog was better. She has been running full speed into our legs to express her displeasure with the cone, and this morning ran through Bo in order to get to the front door.

Hubby is taking her on very short (1 mile) runs now, just to get the yayas out. But she has had ENOUGH of the lying around and wearing a cone!

One week done ... one week until the staples come out and the cone comes off. Sigh!
