Koda came into heat Saturday morning. She bled a tiny bit on our bed. She's been fine besides not being allowed in any of the carpeted rooms. What works best as far a disposable/reusable diapers or boys underwear? |

| Little boys underwear works best. However, I find that putting something on the floor and furniture and limiting them to one room works best as they keep themselves very clean. If you use the underwear or diapers you have to change often, then tend to take them off trying to clean themselves and frankly they get smelly. |

| And how long is the bleeding supposed to last? When can I take her to a doggy park without worrying about her getting prego? |

| You will have to try some pants, but probably a 2 or 3. The bleeding lasts for around 21 days, but can last longer. I would keep her away from the dog park until she hasn't dripped for several days. She probably is going to feel pretty poopy anyway. During the middle of her cycle (around day 7 - 9) the discharge will change to a clearish or light yellowish color. Do not be fooled as she is still in season and that is the time when she is ovulating. After the ovulation period the discharge will change back to red. She will also swell in her little girl parts and her breasts will also get larger. Good luck!! |

Heidi is 43 pounds and wore a 3T or 4T. I use a panty liner with them, especially on the heavier days. Just remember to take her pants off before she goes outside, my husband was bad about that.........

My Maple kept herself pretty clean and her heat cycles did not have alot of bleeding on the first 4 or 5 of them. So, just used the pants made for females in heat with panty liners and they worked fine. Would put them on if company was coming over or if she was going in the car. But yes, remember to take them off before she goes outside! However, when we got our first male dog, well, let's just say that heat cycle was much worse. Since I had no intentions of breeding her she was spade at that time. Funny how bringing that male into the mix really changed everything! |

I went with size 4T (Mickey Mouse theme) boys underwear with a liner. It worked great. She was so happy to sleep with us in bed. She was good about letting me take them off and put them back on when she goes out to potty. I took them off when she went in her pen/crate area for the day. She keeps herself clean, but there are blood spots on the floor. Easy enough to clean. Thanks for the suggestions.

| Her pen/crate area is laminate wood flooring and cleans with any household cleaner, but I use Nature's Miracle. So far no stains on the carpet. Oxy-clean would be good to clean the underwear. Thanks for the tip. |

I went through this with Shiraz for the first time last summer (first female dog I have owned). While it is a bit of a PITA remembering to take the undies off, that was really the worst of it. Other than her pestering Bo (who is neutered) for a good shag |

| She took them off this morning before I got up. Couple blood stains on the sheets, but not too bad. She only wears them when she comes in from her last potty at night, then off in the morning before the first potty. So really not too bad. I've gotten good about where to cut the tail hole. |

My farm store had some premade dog panties for incontinence/heat cycles. They were pricey at almost $20, but they are made of a durable blue jean material, have an elasticized area around the legs, tail hole, and the best part is 2 velcro tabs for easy on and off. My girl never took them off, but she did swipe the pad out a time or too.
I have a friend that recommends toddler swim diapers. I can't remember the reason specifically though. She says they had a character pattern on them, and she'd just find that same spot in the pattern to cut the tail hole out each time. |

Koda is almost 16 months old. I was wondering when she would come into heat, but didn't worry about it too much. I went to the store to get more diaper liners, but they didn't have any that they would recommend and told me to get regular maxi pads. They absorb much better than the diaper liners and I have not had any leakage problems since. |

| Just as another data point, Halo didn't come into season the first time until 20 months old. Her sister came in at 6 months so it varies greatly depending on the girl. Halo now comes in every 9 months. I think when girls are around other females that come into season they tend to sync their cycles to where they come in at about the same time. Also, when you have intact males around the girls come in sooner. |
