I just got back from a walk with Koda, and I noticed she split her nail.  I tried to get a picture, but she won't sit still long enough.  It's cracked toward the base on one side almost from the top to the botom.  It's not frayed at all.  It almost looks as though I could push the sides together.  Some of the quick (I think) is showing, but not much.  There is some blood, but it's not gushing.  Should I let it heal on it's own, tape it up, or take her to the vet?  I'm afraid if I tape it up and either I or she tries to take it off, it will make it worse.  I could put a sock over her foot and tape it on, but I'm worried she would try to pull it off and in the process split the nail more.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

Clean it well with a disinfectant if you suspect any dirt has gotten into it. Pinch it together and superglue it along the crack line on the OUTSIDE. Let a layer dry, then overlay another layer. That will keep it together and sealed until it grows it's way out.
A couple layers of superglue can be used and if you wanted, you could even paint it up with nail hardener or even a nail polish to completely seal the entire nail. Works like a charm!

Thanks.  I will try the super glue.  Seems like that would do the trick.  I finally got a photo when she was sleeping.  It's also partially split on the other side, but the nail seems stable otherwise.

my cocker did that once and I had to take him to the vet and get it cut off the rest of the way because every time he walked it would pinch the quick and he'd yelp. They did put him on antibiotics since the quick was showing in case dirt got in it and cause an infection. OUCH!

My girl, Belle, split her nail several months ago. The super glue didn't work as it would not hold the nail together and it was very painful for her. Ended up taking her to the vet and they removed the torn part of the nail and smoothed the remainder which was just a little stub. She was on antibiotics and I had to keep her from running, but it healed and is growing back slowly.

The superglue seemed to work at first. Then it started coming apart again. I will try another layer and some nail hardener. I should probably cancel the field trial on Saturday, yeah?

Unless you want a bloody mess, I would not run her in a field trial. The way her nail is split, I am pretty sure you are going to have a devil of a time keeping the nail together with super glue. Her nails are fairly long and if the tip hits anything it will just pull apart. I would recommend a trip to the vet and get it removed and cleaned up so it can start healing.

I wouldn't advise running her in a Trial, where she will really be putting it down hard, until you get it healed up.

I'm surprised that the glue isn't working for some, as I've done this patch a half dozen times over the years myself, know many others who have and always with good results. Perhaps the brand used? I dunno, kinda weird. That said, if you can't get it to stick/seal, then Bev"s advice of having the Vet take care of it may be the best route.

Superglue held overnight. I'll keep an eye on it and canceled the trial.

I do the same....super glue......my buddies dog constantly split nails until I made him get them done regularly (clipped/dremelled) & kept short, hasn't done it since. Soon as it heals up, get her nails done & get them done at least monthly. (I dremel my guys every 2 weeks, their nails are SHORT, never split)

Well the nail broke off. We got home Friday and it was dangling. Saturday morning she chewed it off. It doesn't seem to bother her at all. We'll just have to wait for it to grow back.
