So, I've been reading up a little bit on the raw diet for dogs, and thought that I might like to add a raw component to supplement their dogfood. Does anybody else do this? Am I fine in just throwing a couple of raw chicken/beef/pork bones with some meat on them into their food bowls from time to time?

I have done some research on feeding raw and one thing I learned is to not feed kibble and raw at the same meal.  The reason is it takes a dog longer to digest the kibble than it does the raw food.  So if you make sure you keep them as separate meals, from what I have read, it should not be an issue.

We feed ours raw meat (beef) in the winter to keep some weight on them in the cold weather. Other than that they get lots of raw veggies and yogurt.

We do however, feed them a kibble that we like as their meal. The rest is just to supplement.

I read some that some critics of the raw diet said that the bones fed to them had the potential to splinter and damage the esophagus/stomach. Anyone worried about that here?

Also, the few times in the past that my dogs have eaten uncooked bones, they ended up with a good case of diarrhea. Maybe a very slow introduction to them will help to counter that problem though.

We've fed Casey raw meaty bones a few times before... Although he enjoys them, sometimes he'll swallow big chunks of bones, then throw them up.

I was wondering what that pile was by the doorway, then looked more closely and saw a few quarter sized pieces of bones.

We also give our dogs smoked (i assume) bones from the pet store (cow femurs). They look as though they have been cooked somehow and still have the marrow in them. The bones do not splinter, however the dogs can wear away the edges after chewing on the same spot for while.

Ah, yes...I remeber this being a side effect the last time we fed them meaty bones too. Maybe I'm better off just sticking with the pet store variety bones? I was just thinking that giving them the raw bones would be a great way to both give them a nice treat and decrease our family's waste/garbage.

I think that in the past, all they've had are deer and elk bones. Perhaps a couple small chicken bones won't induce the same effect.

If you have more than one dog and feed raw also watch your dogs as I have noticed when I give raw beef bones for my dogs to chew on they get much more possessive of the raw bones as opposed to cooked bones. I do not like to feed the bones to my dogs as part of their dinner as I do not want to risk blockages. I would rather feed things like the meat raw, tripe, etc. I also do not feed raw with their kibble, but rather in a separate meal. I do not feed raw on a regular basis, but more as a special meal/treat.

I think with chicken bones you have to give them raw. Cooking makes them brittle and more susceptible to splinters and causing damage.

I give mine pork necks from time to time, you can get them really cheap at the grocery store. It's more cartilage than bone & the dogs absolutely love them. They do, however, only get them outside (they are NASTY!).
