We are in a massive heat wave here in Ga. Most of my 2 acre back yard is wooded so there is plenty of shade. Even though his water bowl is in the shade also, he never drinks much if any. Not sure if it's a "protest" to us leaving him to go to work or if he just won't drink the water as it warms up. When he comes in, he laps water up after I re-fill it from the tap. Generally, he has little interest in food or water and just wants to play ball or go on our daily 2mi walk. Should I be looking for a device or way to keep his water cool for the 4-6 hrs he is outside or is there some way to train him to drink more often? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

You have to figure out why he is not drinking and then go from there. Is the water in the shade? How deep is the bowl. I have water outside for my dogs, but I got a garden fountain that has a pump that keeps the water circulating. They can't tip it over because it is made of cement and is heavy, the water is filtered through the pump and it is in the shade so it stays pretty cool even in the heat of the TX summer. I refill it every evening so they have fresh water every day. Never had any problems with it getting so hot they won't drink it.

I wonder if one of the fountain waterers would work, it sounds like he likes his water fresh and that would keep it recycled for him to get "fresh" water all the time.

Thanks for the replies so far. His water IS in the shade and gets changed 2-3 times/day. I leave him at 9am and and on of us usually can get back to him by 2-4pm. On really hot days the water is warm to the touch and seems like has not drank any.

We have one dog that won't stop drinking and one that we rarely seem to see drinking, even on REALLY hot days. Maybe he just isn't thirsty?

I know it's bizarre, but I swear our boy just doesn't drink until he is SUPER thirsty. He will drink from a bottle on a run, but he goes to his water dish in the house maybe twice a day.

Cooper (16 mo.) isn't much of a drinker, either. He can play outside in the hot sun all day long and will rarely sit still, his tongue hanging out of his mouth... but even with coercion he won't drink very much. I know with my dog he is always in hunting mode, even if it's just chasing butterflies, fireflies and birds through the yard. Like you, I also keep his water in the shade and refill it when I can to entice him. But I know he's a healthy dog, and I trust that he'll drink when he's thirsty. Perhaps just be extra sure that he's getting enough fluids when you are home with him.

...BTW, Coop is the same way about coming inside. He'd rather be outside panting in the hot sun than inside relaxing on a cold tile floor underneath a ceiling fan. We have to force him inside most nights when it gets dark. Sounds like Dex might be like this, too?! :-)

Until now I thought I was the only one who had a non-drinker! Dexter sounds just like Tessa. It worries me when we are in the field. A training day can be 4-6 hours and ALL the dogs drink a lot from troughs, buckets bowls or water bottles but not Tessa. When it's really hot, it worries me a lot, but then I figured, she's not sick and she's not stupid, the water is there, she'll drink on her terms...

It makes no difference what bowls or what water...although she LOVES the tap water in Black Mountain NC. (I do to, actually. I already warned my friends that next time I will bring jugs to fill and take home with me.) In general, the bowl needs to be clean and the water must be fresh or she won't drink. I change it twice a day.

Before we head out to the plantation for a training day, I make her a soup - a bowl of water mixed with a little cottage cheese for taste or some canned food. She drinks all of that of course. This way she has some fluids in her. I also carry "Recharge" tablets to put in the water if needed, but so far have never used them.

Xara is not a big drinker either. She drinks maybe twice a day, she tanks up each time but I never see her stop for quick drinks like the other dogs here. She too will sit with tongue hanging out but won't drink even if nice cold water is offered. I used to worry until I realized it's just her pattern, she evidently doesn't need or want as much water as Sniper and Lou do.

Max doesn't drink very much either. I only worry about it when it is hot and he is running. Those times I keep a squirt bottle of water and make him drink.

If he's not showing signs of dehydration or signs of illness there really isn't anything you can do about it.
I know it's worrisome and you are definitely paying attention - most people would not notice or just give it a passing thought. He'll do what his body requires. Haiko isn't much of a drinker, either but bregon on the other hand is a camel - come to think of it - Bregon didn't start to drink outdoors until this summer. Always thought he was too preoccupied to drink, but now he does.

Thanks everyone for sharing your info. Glad it's not just Dexter. I did not realize this breed would be so athletic and require so little in the way of human type comforts. He is a beloved pet/friend/child to me since I don't hunt or hunt him. I have given him the job of ridding my back yard of birds, squirrels, dear and anything else that moves. I think that satisfies some of his instincts anyway.

Looks like you're not alone. My GSP, Jasper, isn't a big drinker either. He can go and go and go and go, without stopping for a drink. If your dog isn't looking lethargic or acting funny, I don't think I'd worry about it much. If yours is anything like mine, he probably just finds some shade and sleeps all day while you're at work, and they don't work up much of a thirst doing that.

You could always try freezing the water in the dish overnight & then putting it out for him with a thin layer of water on the top when you leave in the morning. My mom did that for her puppy & he loved it.
