Decided to buy an e-collar. Just need some advice on which kind to buy? I'd like one with a decent range, a few different settings, water proof obviously and doesn't look all bulky and out of place. Any suggestions? Bearing in mind I live in England
Thanks guys. |

When I was looking for one, I went to the manufacturers' websites. However, a good place to start is on the Gun Dog Supply website: http://www.gundogsupply.com/dog-training-collars-buyers-guide.html The link is to the buyer's guide. There may be other places to research. I went with a TriTronic one. I believe it is the Upland G3 EXP. I haven't used it with Bearoff. It worked great with Terra. |

Yeah that looks nice, and I love the bright orange colour, but they're only available in the USA |

Gun dog supply won't ship to England? I have the Tritronics Sport G3 combo and love it. |

| They probably do, but shipping is about $40 on top. If I can't get it from anywhere else then i'll get it sent over, just a bit of a pain. |

Yea I would try eBay.... you have to make sure you can get a 220 volt charger for them though.. or get one with batteries....
I think all of the e-collars are bulky on the dogs neck, just so you know.
I really like our simple sportdog sd400..the guy on gundogsupply recommends it as THE goto entry level collar.....cheap, waterproof, rechargeable, tone, nick and continuous with 8 levels (we only use the #1) only 400 yard range but its good enough for a non-hunter |

I have the sportdog sd400 too, and it has been a great collar for me. It's really "hot", isn't it? I use the #1 setting for my dog too, unless he's really wound up, in which case I need to go to #2 setting to get his attention. And, as a hunter, 400 yards is more than enough range for me; my dog sticks pretty close when we're out looking for birds.

| Re range, keep in mind that it varies depending on conditions and terrain, and given the speed of these dogs. I would not go with anything less than one mile (1600 yards). You may not always need it, but that one day you do need it, you'll be glad to have it. |

My Innotek collar that I absolutely love, is the basic model with a 300 yard range & I am now upgrading to a bigger range because GSPs can get 300 yards away in a heartbeat. I also upgarded to a model that allows you to have more than one collar per transmitter. I checked out a bunch of Gun Dog sites & found some great recommendations for the Sport Dog 1825. Amazon.com cost was $407.72 for transmitter & 2 collars... so I bought it! Eeeek! ...I'm trying to lose more weight, I don't need to eat, right?! lol http://www.amazon.com/SportDOG-SD-1825-SportHunter-Electronic-Training/dp/B00280Q86U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1281768703&sr=8-1 I'm awaiting delivery & will keep fingers crossed that it lives up to the reviews! |

| I too have gone with that Sportdog 1825 model now. Got it for £190 (not sure in dollars) from a website over here so fingers crossed it'll be what i'm looking for. Just wish it was in bright orange like Tessa's! ha, love that colour on a GSP. |

Phil, you can order a replacement strap in a different color. Mine came in black, and I ordered the orange later for added visibility. This way, Tessa has twice the orange on her neck and it helps a great deal spotting her in the field.
Since the black blends in it looks a little less obvious and that may actually be better for you, as you said the UK is not very accepting of these collars.
Anyway, here is the link to the replacement straps, I am sure you can find them elsewhere too:

| Since they are frowned upon in the UK could you put the e-collar on and then put a handkerchief scarf on around the neck to cover up the e-collar? I think it could be done so the handkerchief wouldn't slip under the e-collar... |

Until they're made illegal I wont care what anyone else says or thinks about me or my dog. He's my baby and I intend on doing everything in my power (and budget!) to protect him, whether people are shortsighted enough to realise that or not isn't my problem I think a bright orange collar would be simply gorgeous ha. Thanks Dagmar! |

Yeah, but if you hide the collar, people will be sooo impressed with his recall! I fell for it once - to my defense it was a black lab with a black collar |

| I've had mine for over 6 months and no one's even noticed it. Don't actually think many people over here even know what they look like or what they are as they're so uncommon. |

| £190 is about $300 US & that is a good price. About what we would pay here, actually. Good luck! I've been checking the tracking info on mine for the last 3 days & can't wait! |
