Xara has a bladder infection (it's nice to know that was why she's been peeing ON me and it wasn't just her opinion of me!) however there are also quite a few crystals in her urine too.  The vet they could be caused by the infection but if we re-test her urine 10 days into her antibiotic and they are still there we may have to change her diet to something different. (Will NOT be Science Diet! I do not like that food)

Has anyone dealt with crystals before and what changes did you make to keep them under control?

Never dealt with that before, hope it clears up soon! Glad to hear that Xara isn't just being naughty!

Our boy Oliver had crystals in his bladder. He saw a specialist (because he had other health concerns as well) and we were told that if we didn't resolve the crystal issue, it could turn into a more serious condition requiring surgery. For him especially, surgery would have been dangerous so we diligently followed a course of medication and special food and this worked for him. The food we gave was Medi-Cal Urinary SO.

All dogs have some crystals in their urine - when they bind together to form stones due to high mineral content is when you have problems. Our Shar Pei, Murray (RIP), had this happen when he was about 8 or 9 years old and did cause excessive urination/lack of control -- it's usually worse (more uncontrollable in females than males). The crystals in the urine are a "sign" of the infection -- I believe that most dogs will do just fine when it's caught in time and the proper antibiotics are given... Our boy recovered in around 1 - 2 weeks and never had that problem again. I'm not a fan of Science Diet either.

I had a Bulldog once with struvite crystals discovered during a UTI. She never had any problems again (but flushing out the crystals with the stuff they give the dog to increase urine output was horrific! urine everywhere! but it worked), and I kept her on the regular food (Natures Recipe at the time).

You might want to ask your vet in regards to supplements that keep the urine ph properly balanced. Solid Gold makes a berry supplements that is supposed to help preventing crystals - not sure if it does but can't do any harm. There are other supplements out there. You may also try to feed a good quality/holistic kibble, if you are not already.

To live without dogs would mean accepting a form of blindness. [Thomas McGuane]

I had that happen to a cat of mine, but not a dog. Don't know for sure if the treatment is the same, or even the cause for that matter, but I had to put my cat on a special low magneseum food and put some flax seed oil on the food before he ate it. It was also recommended by the vet that we try to make 50% of his diet consist of wet food, as hydration/dilution is key to keeping the crystals from forming.

Good luck!
