I have a problem with Hogan that seems to be getting worse and worse. He is now nearly 8 months old and has discovered girls!!!!!!!!!!! One of the dogs we live with at the moment is a Siberian Husky, who is a TART. Hogan won't leave her alone. He is always sniffing round her, and the last few days he's started humping her. Every time I catch him I really tell him off. Is this a phase? Is there anything else I should be doing? He is never left alone with her, so every time he does it he is told off. He hasn't actually managed to do anything as such yet, just a humping motion, somewhere on her body. At the same time, might not be linked, he has also started cocking his leg! Please help!! Will this carry on for ever (do I have to neuter him?!) or is it a phase?!

I am interested in info on this too. Working with horses a stud is a stud and whether the mare is in heat or not he can be a nut...I have known a few well trained studs that can be ridden in an arena with mares.

When Hogan shows this behavior stop it and fuss just like you are doing. It is probably not sexual, but more likely dominance with this dog who happens to be a female. The cocking of the leg has nothing to do with the humping behavior. By the way, Ringo tried this a couple of times with my girls when he was about the same age and they both let him know in no uncertain terms it was not acceptable. He has never tried it again, even when Halo is coming into season.

Gator's (neutred) never was much of a humper, but did go through a a phase where he would hump the male cat. I assumed it was a dominance thing. I haven't seen him do it lately though.
