Is there a way we can fix this? There is such a wealth of information on this forum that is unreachable because the search barely ever if at all works.  Seems like a really big problem to me.

I'm not sure how the site is hosted, but if it is a paid host, they should be responsible for this--as it seems like a database access issue.  It works about 1 out of every 10-15 searches for me.

Rick, the owner, host this site and the mailing list for free, at his expense of time and money and has since it's inception to the best of my knowledge.

What kind of problems are you having when you say that it only works 1 out of every 10-15 searches?

Ok.. then maybe its just a server/load issue and it just is what it is. I just wonder if he is aware of the problem.

What happens for me is 14 out of 15 times after I click the search button with my query entered, it just times out after about 20 seconds: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

Try it.....maybe its just me?

Bruce - I have the same problem. Also, when it does come back with something it lists things that have nothing to do with what I was searching. I am guessing it the problem is in the search engine and the keywords we choose to search on. I also suspect it is going into the text and not just the subject which is why we get returns that may not make sense. I also don't know how it handles multiple keyword searches as opposed to a single word. I will often try to find old threads when a new person posts a question that has already been addressed and unless I just remember the exact title I rarely can find the original thread I was looking for short of going page by page back through the archives.

I know that Rick does this out of the goodness of his heart, but it would be nice to get back to some of those old threads to because there is some good info on this site.

I passed this on to Rick to see if there is anything that can be done.

Are you using the search function in the top next to the date, or the one below that in the line that includes "Forums", "Profile", "Members", etc...?
FWIW, I found it difficult as well and by changing my search word got varying results.
Also, Have you tried to narrow your search using the drop down that provides an Advanced Search and searching specific Forums?
Just trying to provide Rick with as much info as possible.

PS. Thanx for bringing this to attention JoeyBean. Hopefully this is something Rick can get resolved, as there is lots of great info to be accessed. As an aside, for those that don't know, Rick has the old Shorthairs Forum archived HERE

LOTS of really great info there as well.

Bruce-

No problem thanks for helping to get the issue resolved. I have tried both methods you mention for searching. And, I always just select the "general" forum for searching, although I think that is the default if you are already browsing the general forum.

I'm thinking from its inconsistency that it is a server load issue. I mean right now there are 500 people online.... If it is run off of a home server thats rough on the SQL database im sure.
