Thinking about switching Joey from orijen adult to acana. I have read a lot of good stuff about acana. I know its the same company, but slightly lower protein (32%), less meat sources and slightly cheaper. I trust the brand, and will be switching our cat to Acana as well because of the Innova P&G thing and recent P&G recalls.
Joey isn't crazy about food in general, and it is very tough to keep weight on her. She shows about 3-5 ribs most of the time, and we let her eat as much as she wants during feedings. Her coat is great, she has lots of energy. Stool is usually great, sometimes her 2nd consecutive poop is looser. I think she just doesn't LOVE the orijen, so I am going to try a couple of the different acana varieties, that are quite a bit cheaper than going to the 6 fish or regional red varietes of Orijen (which are very expensive--$70 for regional red and $65 for 6 fish. regular orijen adult is $60. as opposed to mid $50's for acana).
I was thinking that a different flavor and possibly the lower protien would incourage her to eat more. I bought sample packs of each grain-free acana variety (3 fish, grasslands, prarie) in little bowls and did a taste test with her. First she picked the 3 fish first, then I did it again and she picked the grasslands. The 3 fish STINKS and makes her breath smell, so we might try one of the others--especially since we give her sardines and fish oil once a week anyway.
Does anyone else use Acana? Thoughts on keeping weight on her? I bought a few cans of EVO wet food that I am going to mix in with kibbles but I don't want to spoil her with it. |
