Thinking about switching Joey from orijen adult to acana.  I have read a lot of good stuff about acana.  I know its the same company, but slightly lower protein (32%), less meat sources and slightly cheaper.  I trust the brand, and will be switching our cat to Acana as well because of the Innova P&G thing and recent P&G recalls.

Joey isn't crazy about food in general, and it is very tough to keep weight on her.  She shows about 3-5 ribs most of the time, and we let her eat as much as she wants during feedings.  Her coat is great, she has lots of energy.  Stool is usually great, sometimes her 2nd consecutive poop is looser.   I think she just doesn't LOVE the orijen, so I am going to try a couple of the different acana varieties, that are quite a bit cheaper than going to the 6 fish or regional red varietes of Orijen (which are very expensive--$70 for regional red and $65 for 6 fish. regular orijen adult is $60.  as opposed to mid $50's for acana).

I was thinking that a different flavor and possibly the lower protien would incourage her to eat more.  I bought sample packs of each grain-free acana variety (3 fish, grasslands, prarie) in little bowls and did a taste test with her.  First she picked the 3 fish first, then I did it again and she picked the grasslands.  The 3 fish STINKS and makes her breath smell, so we might try one of the others--especially since we give her sardines and fish oil once a week anyway.

Does anyone else use Acana?  Thoughts on keeping weight on her? I bought a few cans of EVO wet food that I am going to mix in with kibbles but I don't want to spoil her with it.

I was thinking of mixing Acana and Orijen or switching to Acana but I am so happy with Orijen and my store doesn't carry Acana so for now, Orijen it will be. But I think both are great kibbles.

I have been feeding Acana to my 4 GSPs for over a year now. They are all on the Adult formulation but I have used the Sport and Agility food to get weight my very active youngster. I get lots of comments on how nice my liver girl's coat is. A friend of mine feeds his GSP the Acana Lamb and Apple and likes it as well.

I feed Orijen and also was thinking of trying Acana due to the price difference. The other differences (ingredients/guaranteed analysis) are not the different. I also have a very hard time keeping weight on Max. He just is too distracted sometimes to eat. I attribute that to hormones! I can only get some varieties of Acana.

I would be interested to know if she eats better. Jen

tessa- I mixed in the 3 fish pacifica acana in with what was left of joey's orijen kibbles for now. I will try her on the other samples this week.

bravepoint-
I actually didn't see the regular grain inclusive acana bags at the local pet store, just the grain-free ones (pacifica, grasslands, wild prarie), but great to know your dogs are doing great on it

jen-
I'll let you know how it goes. its funny actually last weekend camping our friends had their dog and we had both our dog foods out and they both basically ate each others food (not their own) all weekend..... maybe its just having something different that they like most. I'd like to find something she will enjoy all the time though

I guess since Acana is a Canadian product it's harder to get in the US. The store that I go to will order it in for me and had to do that for the Sport and Agility frmula since they didn't normally stock it.

Orijen is Canadian too - same company in fact - and I am lucky that my store carries it. They have a hard time stocking it consistently though, because it's a small company that became popular really fast, and they can't keep up with the demand, at least always. Not too bad, I just grab a bag when I see one.

Yea were lucky we have a fantastic independent store in the area that has just about everything.  Lots and lots of bags of Acana and Orijen.  You get a $10 gift card every $100 you spend too.

TessaGA,

I know but it seems that many stores stock Orijen and not Acana even here in Canada. There is only 1 store near me that does.

Great deal, JoeyBean. It's not hard to spend $100 on dog food! I'm part of the Acana breeder's program which for every 6 bags purchased, I get 1 free. Unfortunately, I have to get all 7 bags at the same time. It's fun carrying those 30 lb bags out of the store, into the van, out of the van and then into the basement every couple of months! They also give out puppy kits for puppy buyers.
