After our terrible tragedy with Donner I emailed the breeder we bought Blitz and Donner from...I did that Friday.  I didn't put anything acusing the breeding or even ask for any money back so it wasn't that kid of email...we aren't sure exactly why he passed and I said that in the email, so it was just an informative email.  I also let them know how Blitz was doing and that he passed his CGC in 4H with my son.

I haven't heard from them...which I think is weird at first I thought they could be on vacation, but I was on their website and they have a litter of pups so I doubt they would leave.  I hope they are just busy and not being rude.

I thought I would ask the breeders out there, do you prefer to hear updates on the pups you sell and would you want to know about one passing so young?

Even though I have only had 1 GSP litter of my own I have whelped out 2 others and we have had our APBT litter. And YES I would want to know how the pups were doing. Even with the two litters that were not mine as a breeder. I would still want to know! I email my breeders of my dogs all the time with updates on what they are doing and what they have accomplished. Sometimes I hear back and sometimes I don't. You did the right thing!

I can only tell you what I know. Some folks seem to feel that once the pup is out the door that their responsibility ends...they don't take back, they don't offer any mentoring, nada...zip, zilch. I've had someone do that to me once, no twice...the second time...shame on me as my mom used to say.

Then there are those who have claimed the responsibilty for breeding, whelping and rearing those pups...mine are still mine from their first breath until their last breath. I think we learn from others...both positive and negative. Beth is absolutely right...you did the right thing letting the breeder know. If they choose not to respond, then count it as their loss...

Ditto what Beth and Phyllis said. I have stayed in contact with Ringo and Halo's breeder and we are good friends. In fact, I am also good friends with owner of Halo and Ringo's grandmother. We see each other often and share pictures and stories all the time.

It was another story with Belle's breeder. He was not what I call a true breeder in that he had no contract and the litter was an accident. He really wasn't into breeding, but found himself with a litter. I tried to email him a couple of times to let him know that Belle was doing well and never heard anything from him.

I know for me with Halo's litter I am hoping that all my buyer's will stay in touch and I am pretty certain at least some will just because we have been talking to frequently already and the puppies aren't even on the ground yet.

Yes you did right. I know I would want to know if one of my babies had been sick and died at such a young age, or any age for that matter.

Same here. I always hope that buyers will stay in contact and let me know when our grandbabies leave this world. It tears my heart out every time it happens.

I know our breeder loves getting pix of her grandpuppies and loves to know what we've been up to with them. She doesn't always respond ... she is very busy with her own dogs, but I know she appreciates the updates. I think she would DEFINITELY want to know if something similar happened with one of our dogs.

Good news indeed. I also love your new signature line.

I keep in touch with all my dogs breeder's if I can. Unfortunately Sniper's breeder moved and I no longer have contact information, and Lou's was a back yard breeder who could care less that he's an epileptic and has a heart condition.
I talk to Xara's breeder via email a lot though, and when I lost my male springer Dundee, I called his breeder 14 yrs later to tell him of Dun's passing and thank him for allowing me to raise such a wonderful dog. He was thrilled I called him.
I know if I were to ever breed I would hope that the buyers would feel comfortable enough to keep in touch with me and let me know the pups milestones in life.
