I was thinking about switching Gunner to high performance dog food.  I am currently feeding him purina one 26/16.  I was wondering if the 30/20 makes them gain weight or makes them more hyper.  Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I feed a 30/16 and mine have tons of energy and no weight problems. They are not however hyper. As for weight each of my dogs is different, but I just adjust the amount I feed based on how they look. My rule of thumb is I want to see the last rib and maybe a bit of the next to last. I usually feed less in summer and more in winter.

I feed 27-16 for the older dogs and they do perfectly well on that...pups I try to keep under 30 because of the growth factor involved. Right now my 6 week old kids are eating Costco Puppy, mixed in with varying scrambled egg, cottage cheese, yogurt...everyone is at a good weight. Purina One is not neessarily the best to feed, but if I happen to run out on the road, I'll always grab a bag of Sensitive Systems Purina One...dogs never have a problem with messy stools, etc....

Why in particular do you want to change food? If your dog is doing well on it...well....

I know I will get arguments with this, but my dogs stay better on 26/18 all year long.  I tried the 30/20 for over a year and they just put more of it in my back yard and were skinner?  I don't know why, maybe someone here can offer advice, but they hunt just as hard as before, look better and I clean up less.  I have been told 30/20 is needed when hunting everyday, all day or running the trial circuit hard.  Just what I have been told don't shoot the messenger.

Aren't the ingredients a lot more important than the protein/fat numbers? These food companies can put any schlep in the mix to make the numbers whatever they want............. and they do....

just saying...

My personal opinion is each individual has to find what works for them in availability, cost and condition of their dogs. Once you find that it doesn't much matter what others do, think or use. If what you are using works for your dogs and they are healthy and happy you are using the right food.

Right.. I agree. I'm just saying that going strictly by those 2 numbers probably isn't the best way to go regarding food choices.
