I tried the search function first because I know this has been discussed many times before, but it's not working at the moment, sorry!

I have been wanting to upgrade my ecollar for a while now. I have a cheapo one-dog 300-yard range model that works fine... but I have two dogs & they can get 300 yards away in a split second! I consider it so useless that I loaned it out to my mom about 6 months ago.

So, for Christmas I want to buy myself an ecollar set for the dogs. I've been looking at Tritronics & was wondering if anyone else has experience w/the Field 90 G3 EXP®?

http://www.tritronics.com/remotetrainers-G3fieldseries.html#FIELD90G3

Or, does anyone have another suggestion? I want at least 1-mile range, waterproof, expandable for at least 2 dogs.

Thank you!

The only issue I have with the 6 momentary and 6 continuous is that I don't feel it allows enough tweeking than with the 18 levels of low-med-high.

I agree w/Francine. I have one with 6 momentary and 18 continous levels. Although it works great for us, I sometimes wish I had more levels with the momentary as well. It's just a great way to really fine-tune the stimulation. This is especially important if you work with a softer dog.

Mine is a TriTronics too, and I really love it.

I have the Flyaway G3 EXP from the same series as the 90 and it works great. I have never had to go above a 2 on stimulation for my dogs. I currently have two collars and will be adding the 3rd collar for my new pup sometime in the future.

I use ours on level 1 and its more than enough for joey with the momentary and the continuous. For me if she doesn't respond to the nick I just tap the continuous and she comes every time. I think she could actually work with even less. Although the level 1 doesn't feel like much on my skin. Maybe shes "sensitive"

Pain perception plays a role in levels. My dogs don't percieve a low 2.

Both of mine respond 99% of the time to just a tone, so it's more the extended range & ease of one transmitter for two dogs that is important. Daniel is actually a big sissy & yelps when I give him a 1. I haven't had to go above a 3 for Layla to respond & she was hot on the trail of something at the time.

I live in England and the e-collars are very uncommon and kinda frowned upon here but do you guys think they're that good/worth it? I just want to sharpen up bentleys umm "respect" for my commands. He's good, he comes and sits and downs from distance etc but it's often after 2 or 3 shouts, each one progressively louder. Think it'd work?

Philly I wouldn't have a shorthair without an ecollar. Just makes training at a distance so much easier. Since I want an immediate response first time every time, especially on the recall, the ecollar was the only way to go. I only had to use it once or twice on my dogs and now they respond instantly no matter what. I still put the ecollar on when we go hiking or out where we could see critters and of course the dogs go berserk when I get them out because they know we are going somewhere fun, but I don't have to use them. I also play a game with my dogs which helps then keep their focus on me too. I will stop and hide or turn directions when we are hiking and it never ceases to amaze me that they know almost instantly that I have done something. I use that in the field too. When I want Ringo to change directions or move a different place I just change my direction and he will instantly change his (even when he is way out in front of me where I can barely see him and sometimes I can't see him just know where he was hunting). No whistling or hollering. He also does not pay attention to any handler we may be braced with that hollers or whistles now either. Nice, because I can run him on a coarse and never say a word except good boy when he brings me back a bird.

An e-collar will help leaps and bounds, but, you may want to consider that maybe you are stretching out the distances too fast. Just a thought. And then there's the defiant issues dogs go thru at stages in their lives. I use an e-collar very little, but I believe the best trained dogs are dogs that are trained with 100% from start to finish with an e-collar. I choose performance over 100% compliance - 1 reason is b/c in hunting there are no givens and the 2nd reason is that the dog is usually correct - hate to admit it but it's true - I can't smell a bird to save my life.

2nd what Bev said.. now that we have one... I can't imagine not having one. Knowing that at anytime your GSP may see a squirrel, chipmunk, bird and take off full tilt.

We also have been hiding behind trees and changing direction when working off leash. This works great, the look on her face when she realizes Dad isn't there and turns around SPRINTING back to where she last saw me is priceless. Joey, after a few weeks training will heel off leash almost perfectly with no correction. I've been working on whistling (or tone on ecollar)first, to which she responds about 80% of the time, if she doesn't I will nick after.

I want to stick with the whistle because sometimes she wont have the ecollar on, and its a lot less annoying than yelling "joeeeyy come" haha

I couldn't wait for Christmas!

I checked out a bunch of Gun Dog sites & found some great recommendations for the Sport Dog 1825. Amazon.com cost was $407.72 for transmitter & 2 collars... so I bought it! Eeeek! ...I'm trying to lose more weight, I don't need to eat, right?! lol

I'm awaiting delivery & will keep fingers crossed that it lives up to the reviews!

I got the Sport Dog 1825 from gundogsupply.com for $289.95 it is the collar that the owner of the company recommends and I love it

it is on sale right now at gundogsupply.com for $289.95 and it has a ton of options for setting it up and it is good for at least 1 mile range and some claim over 2 miles on flat ground.

From Steve the owner....
The 1825 is listed as a one mile range system. While I have not range tested it in every terrain yet, we got a little over 2 1/2 miles out of it in North Dakota this fall in flat open terrain. Yep. 2 1/2 miles. We will be doing more tests with this, but it beat every other system we had in its category.

here is the write up from that website

You can customize your SportDOG SD-1825 to match your training preference. It comes out of the box set up in MODE-1 (an 8-level continuous + 8-level momentary stimulation one dog collar with a separate tone button), but it can easily be changed into 13 different modes with different button configurations. This allows you to customize your transmitter to your training needs. The wide range of stimulation levels and gradual increases between levels on the SD-1825 are particularly useful with sensitive dogs or breeds.

The SD-1825 features 1 mile of range, a slim profile collar receiver that ensures a perfect fit, and a compact transmitter that's easy to handle. You are also able to transform your one dog system into a two or three dog unit with the "Add-A-Dog" feature. And it's waterproof!

Modes include Continuous, Momentary, Tone, Vibration, Low Continuous-High Continuous, Low Momentary - High Momentary, 3 dog Mode featuring one button per dog (Continuous or Momentary based on the position of the toggle switch), tone with stimulation delay, +2 jump level, 6 dog mode with Continuous only (dogs 1-3 on toggle up, and dogs 4-6 on toggle down), and a programmable continuous hot button.

That review was the reason I finally chose the 1825. :) I got it from Amazon.com, though, since it was much cheaper & part of my purchase went to iGive to be donated to GSP Rescue.
