Thought I'd share this with an audience that can appreciate it...

Soooo, last night, my husband left the house on his normal several-times-weekly trip out to road dogs. We live in Arizona and it's well over 100 degrees during the day, so he does this after dark to help keep the dogs from overheating. When he roads, he has two kennels on the rear rack of the ATV that can hold two dogs each. He rotates dogs in and out of the kennels and roads either two adults or two adults plus a juvenile at a time. The adults + juvenile set up is to help the puppies figure out how this works, and also is motivation to get out there and get moving unless you want your mama and uncle (or other adult relative) to drag your sorry butt down the trail. He carries water for breaks, etc. This setup allows him to make one trip out to the trail and back rather than several trips from the house. That's the background info.

So, last night, he had finished roading all combinations of dogs and had watered and loaded everyone up to go home. He's traveling down the trail in the dark (with headlight) at about 30mph. He comes upon a large diamondback rattler (5-6 feet) crossing the trail he had just been down with dogs in harnesses a few minutes earlier. As he passed by, he turns his head to watch the snake (for safety) and was busy thinking how glad he was that the snake ventured across the trail AFTER he passed by with the dogs on the ground. As he turns to face forward again, WHACK something hits him hard between the eyes. He of course thinks "What the hell??" and slows down to go back to look. He finds a bat, dying on the trail.

MY STUPID HUSBAND KILLED A BAT WITH HIS FACE!

I imagine a good wife would have been supportive and concerned when he returned home, wanting my clinical opinion as to whether or not his nose looked broken. And I did provide said support, but AFTER I laughed until I couldn't breathe.

At first I thought you were going to say there was another snake that came up and hit him in the face.

Then I started laughing out loud that it was bat.  Too funny.  Tell your husband thanks for the good laugh today.

That is hilarious and I am glad your hubby is ok. I did have a bit of concern though, because in Central Texas most of the bats here carry rabies. Not to put a damper on the funny part, but you might want to have the bat checked out just in case. We have had a couple of shorthairs (not mine) find dead bats and drag them home and even though the dogs had rabies shots they had to be quarantined for a month because the bats had died from rabies. Just kind of scary too.

Still would have made an hilarious video. Also, brought back memories of my younger years when my brother and I would take the truck out on country roads and hunt rattlesnakes crossing roads. We would kill them and save the rattles and tan the skins. I had some gorgeous rattlesnake hat bands for my cowboy hat, and belts back then.

I did think about that, and checked his skin carefully. No cuts or abrasions and since the contact was instantaneous (well obviously, at 30mph), I figured it was ok. If it had broken the skin, I would have made him go retrieve it...

Serves the bat right for flying to low. Your husband taught him!

Glad he's alright - it could have been much worse.

His face is fine today, although his pride may be a little more wounded as everyone in the dog club heard the story last night too

OMG, Jean...too funny. Sounds like a story for the upcoming Chukar too! You could even put a bit of color in the shape of a bat across his face...
I can see it now...Batman Holzer. LOL! :)
