My dog escaped...again.
Just got a call from my wife that Jasper has initiated another escape from the back yard. We have a 6 foot high cedar fence, with the boards facing inward. I'm pretty sure that he goes to the corner of the fence, leaps up to the top and gets his paws in the corner, then pulls himself over the top. The past couple of times, he has done this in the corner with the gate, and must have inadvertantly pushed the button hard enough to open the gate and let my other dog out too.
Hopefully they turn up safe and sound. If they do, does anyone have any ideas how to better dog-proof my back yard? I'm thinking maybe some hook and eye latches on the gate will keep him from opening that anymore.
I'll see if I can find a small electric fence to put along the top. Are they solar powered, or do I need to find a power source? I don't currently (no pun intended) have any electricity/outlets in the back yard. BTW, my wife just found them a few blocks away practicing their skills with one of the local youth boys soccer teams. I bet that coach was getting annoyed having two hyper-active dogs running in circles around the field.
I tried the hot wire first, but killed alot of birds so I stopped using that. My problem was the digging out so the wire was set low. Had a lab who could dig out in no time. Then I bought the invisible fence. This kept her away from the fence. She was the only one who had to wear the collar and she knew the only way she could go through that gate, is if a leash were on her. She did not really realize that when I put a leash on, we took the e-collar off. It was well worth the money and time to put it in. We did not bury it in the back yard, we just drapped it on the fence. It was set to beep if she would get too close so she had warning before any correction took place and it was easy to train.
Hope they come home safe.
Only thing that kept our Houdini in was hotwire. One wire along the top, another on the bottom. The first day we had it up he checked it in four different spots before going off an pouting. For the next three days he walked the fence glaring at the wire.
We had an outside outlet so went with the plug in type but I have seen solar models.
We have a two year old son, so the bottom wire is out of the question, but I'm definitely going to take a look at stringing a small solar powered wire along the top.
I was also thinking about making some kind of welded wire leaner extensions to just put in the corners, where he pulls himself over. I dont' think he can manage to pull himself over anywhere other than the corners.
