Almost fungusy looking. We went camping with Joey this weekend (5 days) and her paw pads took a beating. We tried to get a good picture of them but it didn't work too well. I think I've read about this before and people suggested "bag balm" and that I can get it at tractor supply? Any suggestions welcome
here is a pic:

On another , more important note we had a breakthrough weekend with Joey using the Ecollar. This thing is an absolute gift. We never knew how well our pup could behave until this weekend. After training in the yard back home, we got to our campsite and nicked maybe 5 times total as she started to get out of site in the woods then started using just the tone on the collar and she was a whole new dog from that day forward. I recommened the ecollar to EVERYONE! truly amazing

| Pads don't look too bad. Bag balm will work to soften them and help heal them. Other than that I wouldn't worry too much. Very nice pictures too. Looks like you guys had a blast. Glad the ecollar is working for you. |

| Lucky dog. That's awesome that your letting the dog be a dog. Sounds silly but it's so important. Lots of folks also use pad tougheners all the guys I hunt with swear by them. I have never used one but I wouldn't rule it out. Maybe someone can give you more insight on the product. |

Thanks guys!! we had a great time. Beautiful lake we were on.... It was sad coming home to our suburban setting because I feel like we really got a chance to see our dog completely in her element, chasing chipmunks, ducks, scents... all off leash and STILL have control over her. It really is a miracle... Its such a freeing feeling, for us, and more importantly for her. Everything positive I read about the ecollar is true. So nice to see our dog COMPLETELY exhausted at the end of the day, curl up in our tent next to us and sleep for 8+ hours without stirring. now to book the next camping trip..... Bev- Will pick up some bag balm today. She doesn't seem bothered at all by her pads but they don't look too pretty. I think it was all the sand that got to them more than anything. |

Here are a couple of links to some common products (there are others as well):

I personally find keeping the pads in good shape by letting the dogs run on different surfaces like sand, rock, gravel, sidewalk, concrete toughens them up naturally and you don't need to use this other stuff. I have landscaped my back yard so it has river bed gravel, natural rock, crushed granite, pavement and grass. If it is really dry, then I will use something like bag balm to moisturize, but rarely have to use it. I do put boots on or wash the feet off if they are exposed to road salt in the winter. |

Since we have no choice up here in the cold north, we use bag balm a lot in the winter on the dogs' pads. It's a conditioner for the skin as well as being an antisceptic. So if there cuts, it helps them heal up quickly. Also not dangerous to the dogs... (and you can massage the remnants into your hands )
By the way -- awesome pictures of Joey having fun! |
