This is so sad. Donner wasn't even a year old. Way to young to pass away.

So sorry I didn't get on here sooner to give the update, but thanx that did...I had tried but the page would load and then I had everything to deal with
It was such a hard day and I think the hardest was that he went down hill so fast that we never even had time to figure out what really happened. The vet watched his kidney and that seems to be ok...it was his liver and his blood was not clotting...
It is hardest for my youngest son cuz Donner was his...so far he has been at a sleepover and then I was gone last night so my husband had the kids and himself and Blitz sleep put in our camper....tonight will be the first night he will be sleeping in his bed with out his pup...unless I avoid it one more night and let the boys and Blitz sleep on the couch...My son has a hole in his heart and he wants it filled he wants another dog so bad...but I told him we can't replace so we need time to grieve (and replenish our dog funds) before we get another...He says get me a free any type of dog and I said that is not how it works cuz nothing is free and we need our little bit of savings...He is only 6 so he doesn't understand....
Depending on how well we can save and what is available I do think we will get another pup somewhere between Christmas and Spring...closer to Spring...
Thank you everyone for your wishes and blessings...

I like that you explained to him that 'replacing' is not how it works. B/c we can never replace and grieving and at a later time getting another is the best way to go.
Life lessons don't come easy. But, better to learn now than when you're older and don't have the coping skills in place.
We avoid the 'this is your dog' aspect b/c we fear things like what happened to Donner. Better we all grieve the same. Kids tend to feel guiltyand don't really understand what happened or why.
He's 6, but he's smart, he understands he needs to wait for the right dog - b/c the right dog ALWAYS finds their way to the RIGHT home.
Hope the next few days go smooth.
Francine

Thank you for the encouragement on being strong to my little one...I know the right thing is to wait and not replace so I want him to learn too...He is so darn cute and pathetic looking so it can be hard to stay firm, but I am the mom, LOL!
It isn't like each dog is only the kids dog sort of thing....the both played equally with each dog and both boys took turns letting in or out whatever dog was in need...mostly it was which dog slept with which kid...I didn't want to keep changing the dogs as to where they slept cuz I thought (especially as pups) that they needed the secure safe place and to know where they slept and I thought if I kept changing it might not be good...

It's heartbreaking for sure.
Are they running any tests post-mortem to find out what caused the liver failure?

Please accept my sincere sympathies. I read this at work last night, and have been thinking about you and your family since then. It's difficult to find the right words to say. It's so hard to say goodbye to our dear companions, especially when it happens so sudden. Donner was much too young. Hugs to your kids.

No we chose to not run tests to find out for sure...mostly do to our funding. I did let the breeder know about him though it didn't appear to be related to breeding or anything, but felt she would like to know for just in case more pups from that breeding do have liver problems then she could know it was in the genetics...
