Newbie here - GREAT Forum!  "Josie" is one year old and her hair/fur is beginning to thin on the bottom of her neck and chest.  It is getting so thin that we can see her pink skin!  At first we thought it was normal shedding due to the summer heat but it is spreading up the sides of her body.  Also, the hair on her body does not feel as wirey (sp?) as it used to.......Feels soft like the hair on her head.  Any ideas?  We have an appointment with the Vet on Tuesday.  Many thanks -

Bill

Some have found that certain collars will thin the hair on the neck, but your situation doesn't sound like that...

My only guess would be maybe the food?

Sounds like an allergy. Is she laying in some grass now that she might not have been exposed to last winter? Is it itchy? The other thing is it could have been a rash that turned into a skin infection. If that is the case you will need an antibiotic to clear it up. The vet can take a scraping and look at it under the microscope and rule out allot the common skin irritants.

Tessa has this and it's clearly related to her wearing collars. Any kind of rubbing contact rubs the fine hair of the underside of her neck. I tried different materials but it makes no difference. I now walk her mostly in a harness and the hair has grown back. However, it is now rubbing off where the e-collar prongs sit, when she wears it.

Both of mine had no fur on their bellies at all for a while. I switched to a different food & the hair grew in nicely again.

Welcome aboard!! Ditto the other remarks about allergies, one other thing to look into is thyroid, if off can cause thin hair & other issues.
