Perhaps a dumb question...

So, I went about filling out Gun's forms last night and when I got to Dog Name... i got stumped. I'd like to incorporate both of the Breeder's dogs lines into it.

His Dam's kennel is "Impressive"

and his Sire's is "Catskill"

But I am at a loss... how did you guys go about picking out their names?

Most breeders ask that you use their kennel name as the first part of the registered name. Some then also have a theme that they want you to adhere to. Other than than the naming is pretty much up to you. I know there is a limit of the number of characters that is an AKC limitation too.

So for example Halo was from Madrone Kennel and the theme of her litter was Heavenly. So her registered name is Madrone Heavenly Halo. The call name can be a part of the registered name, but it doesn't have to.

We bought our buddy from an independent breeder who didn't have a Kennel name, and we had no intention of breeding him, so we just went with a regional flavor and named him Palouse Prairie Jasper. Jasper for short.

We used the kennel name and then something tied in with the pups call name but since we didn't know much as far as how popular the dam or sire were we didn't use anything related to those names...

So Blitz is Winkelman's Ballroom Blitz (actually I am not sure they asked us to do that for Blitz with the kennel name so we might not have)

Donner is Winkelman's Diamond Donner (they had already written the kennel name in on the papers for this one so I know we used it)

Well, my dilemma is using "Impressive" I'd like to use Catskill as it's his Sire's name and drop Impressive all together but the guy who bred his female with Catskill's Jack already wrote it on the sheet- come to find out that's a no-no. I can't think of anything good... I guess I can take as long as I want though, huh?

Oy.

Well see, we weren't very creative when we register Bo -- he is simply Nuthatch's Bogart. Shiraz is Nuthatch's Unchained Melody (we adopted her at 5 and the breeder likes using song names). My husband got to choose the theme for her last litter: since he is a marathon runner and Razzie LOVES running with him, he chose a running theme. We suggested Nuthatch's Running for the Right (Running is a song by Jully Black). Don't know if she's using it or not.

HI , congrats on your new pup .Look up german names and see if you can match something with IMPRESSIVE . Here is a few non german Impressive,s hotshot or Impressive,s white lightning . My male is named after a old german song . Gunners is my kennel name i think 6 months is the dead line for names with a.k.c. It creeps up fast . good luck and have fun (been far east )

Congrat's on the new pup! Picking a name is tough. My little girl was going to be named Kolibri-Hügel-Herrenhäuser Adelaide. BUT...I thought that if for some reason I ever showed her....who was ever going to be able to pronounce such a mouthful? Be mindful of that.

(a little history: the ex-wife was a "horseperson" with horses that names that few humans could pronounce... which made the names pointless)

I am always proud to use the breeder's kennel name. And even though it may be a "No-no" for a breeder to write down the kennel name on the form, I have had it done and< again, to me it is a mark of respect for the breeder of my fabulous pup, to use it.

I belivee now you can use as many letters as you want, but must pay extra past a certain number, so use the kennel name plus dad's name, perhaps kennel name + somebody OF Dad's name....the possibilities are endless. Each one of my dogs has a reason for their fancy name. It is fun to name them!

Well, I decided on doing Impressive Gewehr von Catskill.

Which incorporates mom and dad, his German line and his name! :)

So he's Impressive Gun of Catskill. Haha :)

Thanks everyone for all of your help!!
