I attended a Brittany club fun days training and met up with Lynn, Dominic, and Amanda Pettinato from the GSP Club of Northern Sacramento Valley to check out the field trial and conformation show process (thanks Phyllis for introducing me to Lynn). They were extremely nice and introduced me to other GSP and Brittany owners. I only planned on watching the events, but before I knew it I was entered in the puppy stake and puppy show. Dominic showed me the way around the field and Koda saw/smelled her first planted birds. She didn't point, but was excited when they were flushed. Toward the end, she was so exhausted she laid down right next to the bird. At the beginning, she didn't want to get splashed with water to cool down, but when we got back she laid down and rolled around in the water tub. Then Amanda showed me how to stack Koda, and we went into the show ring with just one other puppy JJ and Koda came in second, but got her first ribbon! I learned a lot about the whole process and the laid back atmosphere (and good coaches) made me feel less intimidated about the process. I hope to enter Koda in some hunt test and field trials in the near future, and I think she'll catch on quick. I don't have any photos because I wanted to be focused on Koda, but I will try to get some next time. Just thought I would share and welcome any tips for a beginner. |

erika - The Pettinato's are great folks. You were in very good hands. Lynn and I shared training notes for obedience and rally at the GSP Nationals in 2009 and have become friends and stay in touch regularly. Hoping to see them again maybe at the WI Nationals in 2011. Welcome to the shorthair show world. You are going to have a ton of fun. |

| I entered into a hunt test next weekend and a field trial the following. Now that koda has been exposed to birds in the field, I'm hoping her natural instincts kick in. I think I need the reversible yellow and orange collar and maybe a check cord. I am also looking at collars with the tag riveted to it. Should I get the center ring for safety or the d-end for more control? I've met some great people and I hope they don't mind my inexperience. |

The one thing I've noticed about pointer people is they are always willing to help and don't mind inexperience. Good luck with your field work! |

| Koda got a qualifying score at the junior hunt test. 8 for hunting, 9 for bird finding ability, 9 for pointing, and 7 for trainability. She found and held point on 3 birds! |

WTG, Erika!!!! Nothing like a hunt test to get you totally hooked..unless it is that first blue and then purple ribbon at a show! Congrats and keep her movin'... I'm so glad you were able to get in contact with Dom, Lynn and Amanda....they are great folks. One suggestion on the collar (flat field collar with O ring for us), is that you have one plate with your name and addy on it, and then a second plate, mine says "this dog is microchipped, for more information please contact : ...and then my vet's phone number". Flash collars are pretty much SOP no matter what the breed. But orange vest or jacket for a junior???? normally you need that only in shooting stakes or braces, as do the bird planters, gunners, judges....our club keeps extra vests for those who may not have one quite yet. Anyway...so glad you had fun! Keep up the good work!!! |

Looks like a wonderful day! I would really like to get into hunting & let Layla do what she was born to do. She had started hunt training with her two previous owners before I adopted her at 18 months, but that was 3 years ago, so I am sure she needs to be taught all over again. Unfortunately, money is a major issue at the moment, so I have it on my, "Maybe someday!" list. |

| I haven't taught Koda anything. One of the guys at the hunt test asked me how long I've been training her, and he was surprised when I told him I haven't. This was the second time she has seen a planted bird, and the first time she didn't know what to do, but the second time it just clicked. I do have to drive about two hours each way and pay the premium ($45-$55), but it's really fun and it's great to see Koda in her element. I entered into the Amateur Walking Puppy Field Trial this Saturday and am tempted to enter into another hunt test the following weekend. They have four hunt tests in two day, so maybe Koda could get her JH title?! I think I'm starting to get addicted, I just wish the tests/trials were a little closer to home. |
