Dax loves playing with any toys, but he gets a little rough with his retrieving bumpers. It took him less than 5 minutes to chew up his rubber floating buoy, so I got him a canvass one. That lasted about 3 days before it got a hole in it and leaked sand everywhere. I want to get him a duck dummy for retrieving, but theyre just foam and I dont really want him to destroy the thing...theyre like 30 bucks a pop (too much $ on a college budget to have to get a new one every couple days haha). How should I get him to not ruin retrieving tools? I still want to make it fun for him...as I have no big hunting plans for him, I just dont want it beat up in 10 minutes if I can avoid it. Any advice?

Do you let him chew on them when he is not retrieving? I would only use them when he is actually retrieving. Have some other bones or such for him to chew on when he is relaxing.

When my girls stop retrieving and lay down with the frisbee or ball, I take it away so that they know it is only for playtime.

Of course then when they see me take out the frisbee or ball thrower they go crazy as they love to play fetch.

Sound advice there.

Look at the two differently, you have play toys and work items.

Like everyone said only use the bumpers for retrieving. If he stops and starts chewing on them, take the bumper away and stop the retrieving. He will soon learn to always bring them back so he can continue to retrieve.

Can also get him moving. He will think more about moving then chewing. I think it was Pixie that suggested Evan Graham to me guys a good retriever trainer. I don't agree with everything he does but his fundamentals are very sound and he explains Force Fetch better then anyone has to me.

Retrieving training does not have to be about hunting at all. You can teach a dog to do sophisticated retrieves with bumpers, play baseball and havelots of water fun all with objects. The dog will learn so much, too. I believe in a work ethic for dogs -
this is a good way to teach it.
If your dog has time to chew the bumper he is not retrieving. Teach a better recall and a better hold.
If you check into some of the gundog suppliers you may be able to get a good deal
on quantity. We bought 12 3" knobby at Cabelas for a decent price a while ago.
Fun is great - unnecessary expenses are not. Have fun!
