I've read some sources that say to boil shank bones before you give them to dogs.  I've also read some other sources that say not to boil bones because if you do it makes them more prone to splinter.  What are your guys opinions on this?

I just kinda hit em quick on the BBQ kill off some of the germs. Marrow gonna loosen up the dog anyway. Not sure if there is a right or wrong, everyone does it differently depends on what you were raised with. My family always boiled or cooked em. Soon as they splinter I pull em from they dog.

I just boil them enough to slightly turn the marrow and any meat brown. I find that my dogs don't fight over bones if they are cooked. When I give raw bones it tends to bring out their dark sides and they will get into disagreements over the bones. If you don't boil the bones very long they don't splinter.

I've always cooked them, either boiling, cooking in the oven with some water (they love the juice), or in the crock-pot. The crock-pot works great, just add a little water and let them slowcook.
