Just wondering... does anyone else gets hives from their GSP?

Sometimes I notice small hives on my skin after petting Casey on the tops of my hands or on my arms. Same goes for my boyfriend.

Not that I am complaining. It is very tolerable and once I wash my hands and arms it clears up. Just wondering if this is a unique reaction to this breed...

Thanks for any info!

I used to. When I would go visit my dad, his GSP would make me itch on my arms and face. Once I started living with a GSP full time it went away. Both my mom and step-dad say that my two cause them to itch on their arms, but that it goes away when they wash their hands.

My Dave does. When Xara lays on him or sits in his lap he breaks out in hives where ever her fur has touched his skin. Never had a dog do that to him before, but for some reason her fur does.
Me it just makes me itch when she's actually on me due to that short straight hair poking me. But no hives.

I think puppy coat, in particular, is very prone to making you itchy and causing hives. Have noticed this since I got my first Shorthair in 1988. Like Mel, the big guys are short and prickly but no hives. With those under a year old...yikes! Now with 8 12 day old furkids to play with and watch grow...I'm takin my antihistamine! LOL!!

I have never had that problem, but I have had my shorthairs get into things that made me react. I kept getting breakouts from poison oak and couldn't figure out what was going on. Turns out there was a patch in the backyard where my dogs played. They would get the resin on their coat and when I petted or hugged them some would get transferred. Once I found that and got rid of it the problem went away.

My husband, Scot didn't like Kaiser, our former shorthair to sleep in bed with him, because his hair would make him itch. I don't hear the complaint with our current shorthair. Neither of them would make me itch.

When Bo was young and would get really excited both my husband and I would get itchy if he touched us. I can't recall this being a problem recently (Bo is now 3.5 yo).

When I first got my guy I reacted a bit. Short hair must have gotten in my skin or something but as time rolled on you get immune. Doesn't bother me now at all no reactions. I'd love to follow this up in a year or so :)

No problems with the first dog, he has a slightly longer softer coat. The 2nd has really short coarse hair and my partner reacts instantly. Good to hear this may get better as he gets older!

Do you have any allergies? I am allergic to... well...everything. Miss Adie loves to run through the tall grass in the yard, and I have noticed I will have an allergic reaction when I pet her after she has done so. She will collect grass pollen in her coat. I have taken to wiping her down after she has her "walks" with at least a dry towel or just wait a while for it to distrubute around the house.
