I will be picking up a new male pup in a month. I am not sure I want to neuter him. I want to be sure he developes completely physically and has the character and conformation of a mature male. Do you recommend neutering and if so at what age? He will be a family pet that hunts.

I do recommend neutering if you are not planning on breeding. For males I would wait until they are at least a year and a half. That said there are also good reasons that some neuter sooner. Consult your vet as well.

Ooo... poor Dieter! Probably won't even slow him down -- certainly didn't for Bo when we got him done. Although, it REALLY helped with his humping tendancies!!!

Now we just have to figure out when to get Raz fixed. She ought to be a joy since she LOVES to run with my husband and may not take to "bed rest" lightly

It was easier keeping Blitz on low energy mode cuz he was an only dog, so we would walk him on the leash to go outside and in the house we just didn't play with him and he did fine, but after about 5 days we let him run (even though the vet said 10 days).

With Donner is was impossible to keep him from playing. For about 2 days we would holler at him if he tried playing in the house and we kept him on the leash outside. I would have put him in his cage except that after the vet/neutering he now yipes and barks in his cage so I didn't want to enforce that. The vet said he yiped the entire time there except when he was totally knocked out for surgery, just drugged he still yiped! So after 2 days Donner was so bound up with energy we just let him go on day 3. His stitches did just fine...

I would also talk with the breeder. They may have specific reasons (such as showing, trialing, etc.) that they prefer he not be neutered until they've had a chance to look him over as he grows.

Just curious, but what does the breeder have to do with the OP's decision to get the dog neutered? They've sold the dog on so he has nothing to do with them whatsoever?

I'd say wait until 18 months if you're set on getting him done. Let him fully grow before getting him snipped!

Everyone's got a different take on this, but I think you'll find most responsible breeders take a semi-active role in the lives of their puppies long past the "sale" as you put it. Personally, as a breeder, I am responsible for those pups that I put on the ground until they day they leave for the Rainbow Bridge.

In addition, many new puppy folks come to the Fancy with a desire to know more about trialing, conformation and obedience, but may not feel confident in making the decision to invest themselves into those interests without information from their breeder....does my dog stack up against competition, how do I go about field trialing, what about showing, etc.? There's been many a good, if not great dog, who was spayed or neutered as "just a pet" and then six months later...OMG...what have I done...

Just wanted to emphasize that sometimes there are reasons to neuter earlier, such as behavioral problems or if there are intact bitches, who might come in season, nearby or with whom he interacts. It is not always possible to easily manage such situations. My sister's moderately sized Golden was neutered at 13 months, with no ill effects. He looks lovely, good bone, not stringy and is 100% male. I personally prefer a neutered male for competition obedience.
