Hi I am new to this forum, thought I would jump in and ask for some ideas. We have a VERY active 9 month old GSP. I can not find a toy out there that she will not chew up and shred! I have tried stuffed animals, which the stuffing gets torn out with in 1 minute. We have done kongs, but she is able to rip off all of the material, or shred the rope kind. She loves rawhide, but ends up swallowing then before they are even soft. . Right now her chew of choice is the walls or molding, naughty little thing. I know this is just the puppy stage and will hopefully resolve soon, but would love some ideas in the meantime!

The only thing that ever worked with my power chewers was cow hooves, but you still have to watch them very carefully as they get whittled down. And they stink. |

I have had success with Nylabone products. In particular the Galileo bone and Puzzle bone. I believe they are going to discontinue the Puzzle bone though as it is not a big seller. The Puzzle bone may not be right for you but I would think the Galileo would work. I think with the right chewer, the Puzzle bone will come apart. |

| My GSP Seven who is 4 years old...eats nylabones...we like the "real" bones from the pet store. We get the empty ones that look like they have been bleeched. They do come filled with stuff, but Seven would rather have them empty...FYI if you have wood floors they sound like glass breaking when they drop ;-) He enjoys them and it takes a REALLY long time to finish them. Good Luck |

| We've been getting the cow bones from either Petco or Petsmart. You can get them either empty or filled with some kind of tastey treat on the inside. I really like to get these because they last a lot longer than plain 'ol rawhide. Bo chews a lot and this seems to satisfy his need to chew. And they really do last a long time. |

Thank you all so much for your help! We have tried the nylabone, and that is the one and only thing in this whole house that she will not chew on. I will go tomorrow and see if I can find the bones that you all mentioned. |

| My boys must not be as powerful chewers as I thought they were since they have never destroyed any size Nylabone. When I get them real bones, I must be getting ones that are not as strong because they do tend to break those into pieces. |

Nylabones or big rag bones are they only thing that last here. It takes me longer to clean up the fluff from a squeaky stuffed toy than it takes for the dogs to destroy it! Nylabones come in a variety of shapes and flavours. We have 2 rings that we have had for almost 5 years. They are getting are pretty rough around the edges but still a circle. The dogs put a paw thru to hold it up to chew on it. I gave them wishbone shaped nylabones for Christmas and they are still enjoying chewing them. I do give marrow bones as well. Maybe my girls aren't as powerful chewers as some.... Gail |

Mocha and Belle have destroyed the nylabones that I have tried too. The others will chew on them forever. My girls will take no time at all and one end will be off and gone. I get the huge beef knuckles from our co op farm store. They last forever. After a month ot ywo they will be down to half size but they do hold up. They are basted and roasted so they don't splinter. I haven't tried other nylabone products(except frisbees) so I don't know if they are better than the ones I tried. BTW, Is you GSP a boy or girl? How about some pics. We love to see them!!! |

Bogart is nine months old as well -- so far we have had a lot of success with cow hooves and bull pizzles. He has a kong ball that he loves and a Bad Cuz ball that he got for Christmas that he thinks is the greatest (it honks when squeezed). He has to be chewing something CONSTANTLY, so anything that is hard solid rubber is the best (note: the pup treads tire was destroyed in a half hour). He is only occassionally interested in the nylabone. We've given up on fluffy toys and beds. He gets layers of polar fleece blankets in his crate, which end up being just as comfy as a pillow. |

Belle and Halo will not touch Nylabones or Kongs. I do get them the real bones from PetsMart and Petco (mentioned earlier in the post) and they last forever. Belle is the big chewer and loves bones best. I also get her very large smoked and basted bones at a local pet store. They look like the whole thigh leg of a cow. She loves those and will spend days chewing on them. They too last forever. It's funny watching her carry that huge bone around the backyard.
Halo loves stuffed toys, but like others the stuffing is out in no time. I get squirrels at PetsMart that do not have any stuffing in them (you can put a squeaky inside and they come with extra squeakies) and those last a long time. She doesn't even care if they have a squeaky. Also, the Coleman plush animals are great and also do not have stuffing. I got Halo a fox and it looks real. The Coleman toys are a bit pricey, but the fox is as good as the day I bought it. I also found a set of rings made of what looks like imitation lamb at a dog show that Halo and Belle pull, chew and throw around. Theyb really like getting on opposite ends of the ring and pulling. It lasts forever too, but even when a ring lets go they still have a great toy to play with.
Both my girls like to retrieve balls, but prefer them to be squeaky. I haven't found a ball yet that makes a good squeak and lasts longer than a few minutes.
I am constantly on the watch for GSP proof toys so this thread is great.

The only thing I have ever had success with was the Extreme Kong (the black one). Winston was a 74lb dog with strong jaws and chewed and chewed and chewed that thing. I always wondered at the fact that he never could destroy it (I tell ya he tried....he must have had jaws of iron after the effort!!) When he wasn't just chewing on it I would put apple slices in the middle (not as messy as peanut butter) it was hilarious watching him pick it up and drop it over and over as each piece came flying out . In the summer I gave him raw marrow bones that I got from our butchers...I kept them in the freezer and on a hot day I'd pull them out. Also remember this chewing thing could pass, My first GSP we got at 9mts and he went threw a couple weeks where he'd chew(and of course destroy) anything within reach...after it passed you couldn't hardly get him to chew anything that wasn't food. |

My male is a power chewer who goes through almost everything in minutes. The only things that have lasted are the Nylabones (which he doesn't touch anymore), the black kong (which he doesn't touch anymore) and Zogoflex ball and bone (which he LOVES). They're much harder to find than the other things mentioned in this thread, and probably more expensive than most, but they really do last and the dogs love them. More info here:

There is a dealer locator on the left hand side which can tell you where to find them if you don't want to order online. |

I'd forgotten about the West Paw Design toys. Bo has the zisc and it has proven to be EXTREMELY durable. We play with it out in the snow with him ... we've had it five months and not a scratch. FYI - one week in and the bad cuz has lost an ear, has a slightly torn foot, but is otherwise fully intact |

Thank you all so much for the ideas. I found a store here that sells West Paw design toys so I will head up there tomorrow. I think that I might have some better luck for some heavy duty toys there, then at Petco.
I am also glad to hear that it is just not my dog that loves to chew, makes me feel better
I would love to show off some pictures of my girl! Her name is Aspen and we got her when she was 7 weeks old. She is now almost 9 months.
Here she is at 7 weeks old

Here she is now

| Pretty puppy. When I got Molly I wanted a white dog with liver head and patches. Now I see the heavily ticked dogs and love those also. There is such an awesome range of colors and patterns which makes every GSP unique. I found on the toy website that the pet "resort" where we board Molly sells them. |

Webster loves to chew & carry, fetch & play tug of war with these. They are called Invincible chains. I have seen them at a number of pet stores including petsmart.
Webster won't touch a nylabone or kong & makes a mess of everything else. This is one toy that I have found to be 'Webster proof' |

| My GSPs love the chains as well, especially when it comes to tug of war games between them. But, they are, alas, not truly invincible. They do last quite a while, but my obsessi... er... POWERFUL chewers do eventually turn them into pieces. Actually, I haven't found anything, even the super Kongs, that they won't eventuallly get through, the naughty little monkeys! |
