Late last night Dax started to cough, really hard. Usually coughing about 3 or 4 times and then gagging. Today he is still coughing a little bit and threw up a little foam. He was at the river yesterday evening, could he have inhaled some water?

I suppose it's possible he inhaled water. But the way you describe it sounds like kennel cough. It's a very distinctive cough, sounds like they are trying to bring up a hair ball or something and often ends with throwing up a little foamy mucus. I would call the vet. Usually antibiotics are given and otherwise healthy dogs get through it just fine.

I second that though I have never had or seen a dog with kennel cough, I am just going by what I have read about it.

You can give him Robitussin to help with the cough, the regualr, not any with stuff for sore throat, runny nose etc. I have had dogs get it in the past, I am sure Dax will get through it fine, sounds bad, but just a case of doggie bronchitis. Good thing is once they have it, they rarely ever get it again.(if they do it is much milder)
Oh...give the Robitussin outside, they DO NOT like it, LOL!!!!!

Definitely sounds like kennel cough. We've had it here, even after vaccination as it doesn't protect against all strains. It can last quite a long time. In the UK, vets ask dogs with suspected kennel cough not to wait in the waiting room at the surgery to minimise risk of spreading it.
