Cocoa will be 5 months old next Thursday and is going awesome. She is really coming along with obedience and her temperment is amazing for such a young pup. However, she does not bark at all. Not that I want a barking dog, I just figured she would bark when excited, but nothing. She will whine at times and I have heard her growl when playing, but I have yet to hear her bark. The kids say they have heard her but my wife and I havent. I'm not really worried but wondering if this is normal.

| My older dog didn't bark till we got our other dog...He only barks to get the other one playing. He doesn't bark if someone rings the doorbell or anything like that... |

| I have 4 GSPs and one of them rarely barks. Avery doesn't bark when the door bell rings and 2 of the others do. If we get her really excited playing then she will sometimes bark. |

Just thnk your lucky stars and be happy you have a quiet dog! I own Shelties, too, and my young one is the barkiest dog I have ever owned. Shelties bark when happy. They bark when they want something. They bark when running, when they see someone or something. They bark when startled. My young one barks when the phone rings! Good grief. Only one of my GSPs is really barky. The others bark when someone is at the door, but my first two rarely even barked then. I am sure she will bark eventually, but count your blessings! |

| My Belle didn't bark until she was over 6 months old. When she did we all just stared at her because she had a big deep bark. She still does not bark much unless there is a reason, so when she barks we pay attention. |

Dax only barks when playing. When theres someone at the door all the other dogs go crazy with their little yappy barks...he just comes running to greet whoever is here. Sometimes at night he and mylee get suspicious of something outside. Our little lap dog Mylee will growl and bark, which sets him off to growl, huff a little bit of a quiet bark....and then stand behind me wondering what to do haha....I hope no one ever breaks in hahaha, he'd probably either get excited to greet them or run to his crate if they seemed like trouble

| Oh man, my dog made a liar out of me tonight. I took him to the river fishing with me, and he spotted a guy fishing on the rocks. He barked at him for like 10 minutes before I could get him to shut up....he never barks at people haha, figures he does this right after I mention he never barks. oh well |

| Same as a lot of other posters said... Wolfgang didn't really bark until he was over 6 or 7 months old. He still doesn't bark much (e.g., at strangers, cars, deer, etc.) -- usually only to get my attention. |

Give it some time............ and the right situation. Once they discover their voice- just like human babies, you won't be able to shut them up. Rob |

Buddy didn't bark until just about 9 months old, Gracie on the other hand was barking at 10 weeks old. Buddy now is a quit guy, only really barks at the door bell, or at night if he here's a strange noise. |

My friend who has a barky Sheltie would like to know what you do about it, because hers is driving her batty. |
