Gail, do you know anywhere to get some good obedience classes? All i have in my area is Petsmart and ive watched one of the classes, its everything that i taught my dog in the first week i had him.. "sit" Stay" Liedown" "paw" "spin". I need something more advanced maybe? hes a fast learner... hence why i have a problem with him looking out the window to watch the squirrels. gotta love GSP's.
But id be interested in obedience especially since its summer time now, but i need to find a good place for it.

Also since im new ive noticed that it is routine to post a picture of your dog,so here my boy is:

A handsome boy.

What you can do to increase his understanding and response to commands he already knows is have him obey them at distances - but on a long line. When you can get him to sit, stand and recall with a 30'-50' line held loose or dragging in several locations with increased distactions you are ready to try off leash.
If he knows sit well (or another stationary command) he will not break it - even for his favorite toy.
Mastering these 3 commands can take you well into fall.

Keep your standards high,be consistent and don't make excuses for him.
It's all about having fun but learning isn't always smiley faces - as I'm sure you figued out in your school.

Hello Chris and welcome aboard!!! Wanted to say I am very impressed with your question asking and wanting to do something with your Riley, very nice to see from someone your age, kudos!!!
As to hunting, I have a mentored youth hunting program, I bet of you contact local clubs, someone there does something similar. Some of the kids parents work a lot or just don't hunt, I pick them up or arrange for them to meet me out and we hunt together over my dogs.
I'm betting of you join a local hunting club/GSP club there will be someone willing to take you and Riley under their wing.......and good luck with him!!!!

Thank you pixie i will practice with him all summer i need to go get a long lead from the petstore first, as this can also help me teach him WHOA at a long distance.

Thank you Zodiak for the warm welcome, I will see if we have something like that "hunt club" here that would be amazing. I do love animals and hate to see them die but hunting i find is fun if your doing it for the right reasons. For example killing a bear for its fur i find cruel. Anyways i need to work on Rileys training and then hopefully i can do something like hunting or SAR with him. I do know someone who hunts in london ontario but i dont know if he hunts birds ive seen him hunt deer and rabbits so ill have to find out.

Thanks for the suggestion.

chris
