| 4 is a lot but 2 of my dogs are 11 and 12 years old so don't need as much exercise. They are retired from competition. The younger 2 at almost 2 and 8 years keep me really busy..... |

Gail what kind of field work do you do with your dogs? So what type of training would i be looking at? i want to do something that is interesting for myself and my dog? Hunting would be cool but i dont know when i will be able to get a hunting license, probably not for a few years, maybe after i become a k9 unit police then ill look at hunting. But for now i need some thing to keep his prey drive going. He is eager to hunt as i have seen him point before and i have never taught him anything about hunting. He is always using his nose. But what kind of events are held in toronto? I would love to go to one. i have been to the dog show at the exhibition and last year i talked to one of the trainers there and she had a GSP puppy in the back that she was trainign for next years show and i got her to go get him so i could see him. Absolutly beautiful dog. Cost her $2000 i forget what his bloodline was but he will be in this years show. I would love to get another one but i dont have a big enough backyard or the money. Maybe in a year or 2. I got him from a breeder in oakvill, they werent i guess like a "known" breeder that had an amazing bloodline as i didnt get papers with him. But it was all i could afford when i baught him i was only 13 turning 14. But i love him to death and wouldnt trade him for anything. I will research those foods thanks for the help guys ! chris |

| http://home.cogeco.ca/~j_flores// thats the link to the site i found my dog, he is in the 2008 litter. I did have a vet check the health of the puppy before i purchased him and they gave me a health garantee that if something happends to him thats caused genertically that i get either a new puppy or my money back. But no registration papers or pedigree. |

Chris, I do CKC field tests and some NAVHDA. If money is tight, field work is probably not going to be an avenue that you would consider pursuing. Of all the activities that I dow ith my dogs, it is probably the most expensive. You need birds and large fields to work in. The NAVHDA green book which is on their web site is an excellent resource and relatively cheap. Many of the large breeders in ON foster their breeding females. Ask everbell how that works. Good luck with Riley! |

Hi Chris and everyone,
I'm new to this forum, but not new to the world of GSP's. I have been "lurking", enjoying reading all of the posts but haven't contributed so far. Chris, you asked about a rescue, and there isn't a formal one in Canada for GSP's specifically that I am aware of. However, there is a 3yo female GSP in the Georgina (in Keswick) animal shelter that was picked up as a stray. Her name is Rita. You can visit www.town.georgina.on.ca/animal-adoptions.aspx and click on the available animals link to take a look.

A very fun thing to do with a dog is retriever training. It encompasses sooo much. Look into Evan Graham's SmartWorks Series. |

Chris, Gail is right ... our breeder often fosters pups. In fact, our girl Shiraz, is a foster (who we will be officially adopting this summer once her breeding career is over). I'm not sure rescues in Canada are as common since this isn't a super-popular breed here. |

Check out this page on the GSPCC site
http://www.gspcanada.com/breedinfo.htm
. There are a few breeders in the Toronto area who might foster and/or be able to help you with some local resources for helping your dog burn through some energy. |

| I am not sure it is easier to have 2 GSP's but it isn't harder....we got our second one to help with exercise and companionship when we can't keep up, LOL! |

Having 2 as family pets is about the same as having one, except more food. If you are wanting to train 2 or more dogs then it can become a burden. |

| I can see the training being an issue...though we aren't doing too bad having the second one and training them both, but I am not training for hunting or anything specific yet... |

Thanks Gail will look into purchasing that book as i was just about to ask you guys if you know any good books to help me learn as much as possible about this wonderful breed and trainign them.
Hi Emily and welcome i am new here also, just the othr day i was looking at the breeders website that i got my dog from and this link was there and thats how i found this site. I wish i could adopt Rita, but since she was a stray, and i dont know what her past was like, i wouldnt be allowed to get her because of my little sister. The last thing i want is a dog snapping on her. Even though gsp's are a great family dog. Thanks for the link i appreciate it.
as for getting another dog, i have spoken to my mom and as we were speaking she was looking threw the site and said she had to leave before i convinced her to get another one LOL. But she said if we move , which we probably will be in the next year or 2, maybe sooner, that we can look into it. But how does this foster a puppy thing work?
Pixie bee, i would be very inetersted in retrieving, he LOVES to play fetch. i will take a good look into it, thanks

Some great advice here. A couple of thoughts for you: for barking you might want to try a bark collar. There are two kinds, one that sprays something like citronella and the other which works more like an ecollar with a stimulation. Most people I know that use bark collars prefer the one that gives the stimulation. Might keep you and your boy in the good graces of your neighbors. As for activities, since you are looking at going into canine police work you might want to check out obedience and/or rally, and tracking or search and rescue. Maybe the folks in Canada can point you in the right direction for these as well. As for owning more than one, I currently have two females and a male. I just bred my youngest female and am waiting to find out if she is pregnant. If she is, I plan on keeping one of the females, so I will have four. Sometimes having multiples is hard as it takes allot of time training, and of course the cost, but boy is it fun otherwise. I just love this breed and cannot even think about not have shorthairs in my life. Good luck with your pup!! If you have obedience questions, holler as I compete all my dogs in obedience. I also do hunt tests, field trials, agility, flyball, and my oldest dog is a therapy dog. And yes, my life has gone to the dogs. |

Thank you, yes i will most likely be getting some sort of collar either the e collar or bark collar. Yes i do plan on becoming a k9 unit officer, i am taking courses in school for it. I would love to participate in search and rescue. I did hear of some kind of program, that they will train normal house pets like my dog and me to learn how to find missing people. In case of a missing person report and they are going to have volunteer searchers they will give me a call so that me and my dog can help. But im not sure if they have that in canada or in ontario. What are the field trials and hunt tests? is there something i can do with him that allows him to use his instict to run and find birds and point, but not actually hunt since im too young? also what is rally? thank you chris |

Chris, There is most definitely Search and Rescue in Ontario. My boss has 2 dogs that are OPP certified. She just started a course called Canine Nose Work which I think is sort of a precursor to drug detection stuff. I can ask her if she can recommend a SAR trainer closer to you. |

I am interested but my dad thinks maybe my dog isnt like well behaved enough. He is still learning some things annd he needs more work on the STAY annd he gets destracted. But i am working on it sonce it is summer time now. But i would love to do some SAR training after he is a well rounded dog with stay and learning to listen to me and not watch the other dog walking by us. the SAR training would also look amazing on a resume or something when i sign up for the force ad they are seeing that i have been threw SAR training with my dog as a kid. I am very interested in that, do you know how much trainig like that would approx. cost? thank you very much for that input i had no idea we had something like that. chris |

| I posted this on your other thread, but will repeat here. I think you should enroll you and your dog in obedience class. It will help you and your dog, especially with the focus and distractions. Good luck!! |

| Search and Rescue is very specialized training so probably expensive. I agree with Bev. You should definitely look into an obedience class to improve your stays and his focus on you. |
