About a week and a half ago, I was getting dinner ready. Bo was of course underfoot in the kitchen and I spilt half a pot of boiling water on him. On the good side, once I managed to grab him, smooth the hot water off his skin, added a cool wet towel and an ice pack, he seemed. no worse for wear, although VERY frightened.

Well it seems as though it just took a while for the effects to show. He's got some sore (and itchy-looking) scabs forming on his back. Poor fella doesn't even want to go outside (it's very hot here right now) since it probably feels like he's being burned again.

I tried putting some Benadryl on the scabs, but I don't know if that helped. Anyone else ever dealt with a burn?

My mom did that when I was a little girl with one of our greyhounds. I don't remember what we did, but she did ok. Left some scarring, but nothing else. You might want to try some aloe and/or vitamin E, both should make it feel better and help any potential scarring. To this day I worry whenever I am cooking. Make the dogs stay out of the kitchen.

Ya .. lesson learned for the poor Bo. The vet looked at it when I had him cause he had a sore tummy last week (what a month!). I think the warmer weather is really aggravating it now though. I've got him wearing one of my husband t-shirts to keep him from licking it.

Got some aloe for his back last night. Seemed to help a bit, but when he went into his crate last night he made a mess of his back. So -- "cone of shame", more aloe and a lot of TLC today. If I have to, I'll leave the cone on tonight as well and let him sleep upstairs with me...

My sister works for a doctor and she has always said that aloe is actually not good for burns...something about how it releases the heat....but you are past the fresh burn and into the scab part so aloe might do the trick in soothing it and keeping it moist...

Ya ... I wouldn't put anything on a fresh burn either. I think we are into the "ooo, my back is ITCHY!" phase. Such a sad face looking at me from the couch ... :(

You could ask your vet for some silvadene cream- used to treat burns.

I agree aloe is not good for fresh burns, but for after it often helps. You might want to try a tshirt instead of the cone of shame. Just knot it up at the waste. Would definitely be more comfortable for the poor boy. Hope he gets better soon.

I did try the t-shirt -- he chewed through it last night and gave himself a good gash in the back. The cone was really a last resort.

Ya ... VERY quiet doggy. Still on antibiotics for the upset tummy (possible giardia). He looks soooooooooo sad :( He is now lying half his body on his dog bed with his head on the floor.

Dont forget to give him probiotics while he is on antibiotics. The antibiotics destroy the bad as well as the Good bacteria. Should be taken about 4 hrs after taking the antibiotics, and continue at least one month after taking the antibiotics. Probiotics really help with the health and well being in all animals and humans too. Good luck! Hope your pup is feeling better soon.

Thanks -- he gets at least a half cup of really good probiotic yogurt every day.

He had a little setback today since we had a 5.0 earth quake here today and I think it kind of freaked him out. He was alone in the house (in his crate) and opened a new sore in his back. Poor fella -- it's been tough month!

Poor Bo! A 5.0 earthquake would freak me out too. Poor boy needs a break.
