A GSP friend of mine needed someone to show her dog today, and as I was going to watch anyway, I agreed to do it. It was really great practice, as Hogan has his first show in 2 weeks, and I've never been in the dog show ring before! (Apart from the charity dog show which was more sit down and cuddle your dog then the judge comes round and asks what treats he likes

Not only was it great practice for me, Hogan spent the day with 4 other GSP's and did really good. They were all tethered to a stake in the shade next to our "camp" for the day. It's the first time he's been in that situation but he did so good. Was very relaxed and chilled out.

We then went home, and played with them all, plus the three dogs Lyn left at home. Hogan slept all evening

Anyway, here are a few pics. Feel free to critique the video. I've been watching it over and over again to try and see what I did wrong/how I can improve. Thanks!

This picture is really significant. The dog in the pic is really nervy of people she doesn't know. I don't see her that much as she tends to stay at home out of the way, yet she came straight up and cuddled into me.

Wow now that's a lot of GSPs! I bet it was fun getting them all together. I can't make comments on the showing since I know nothing about it but I bet it was a great experience.

Looks like a fun day! I don't know anything about showing, either, sorry!

What great exposure for you. how lucky you are.
I really liked the hands on approach of the judge, feeling for angulation. I've been trying to self teach this method.

Much improvement. I really liked how you gated the dog. You guys looked really good on the down and back and the around. A couple of things (and these are minor) in the stand for the judges exam I think the dog would show better if you either stood up (and maybe you can't because the dog is a pup and won't stand still) or squat down. That is just an opinion on my part though. If you notice when the judge walks up he leans way over the dog and the dog pulls back. That is a very normal reaction. So, in training with Hogan get lots of different people to lean over him and go over him. He will get used to it and not pull back. When the judge is done going over the front of the dog I like to step in front of the dog and hold the head and scratch their ears. It relaxes the dog, the dog can't pull their head around, and most judges like it. You can also get the dog to pull up on his front that way and it makes the side and rear look better. Finally when you finished your final around you ran up on the dog in front of you. Don't do that as it gives you no room to show off your dog. Also, always assume the judge is watching and do not quit showing your dog. At the end of the go around get your dog to free stack. Some judges may be turned away already, but allot of them are not.

Pixie most of the judges I have shown under go over the dogs just as this one did. Many go over them even more. Pretty normal for a judge to put their hands on the dog, but it is the whole package they are judging so I liked seeing this judge also step back and take a look at the overall dog. You get just as much info on the structure of the dog with that overall look too.

I like the look of GSP's with their tails intact. Never see them like that around here.

I agree with what Bev said. I personally would kneel down for the exam. I am 5'10" and with my male I stack him standing, with my female I stack her from a kneeling position. With both, once they are stacked, I am on my knees either at their side or slightly in front of them. With my male, I will move to his head once the judge has moved on to the neck and shoulders. My female seems to respond better if I stay put and just bait her. The added benefit if you are kneeling is that you can be focused on your dog, but at the same time be able to see where the judge is without having to look up from the dog (think of it as moving your eyes rather than your whole head).

Otherwise, I think your running looks great! You did a really nice job for your first time in the ring. It will be easier with your own dog because you will figure out what works for Hogan and what doesn't. The one thing that I did notice, from what I can tell (and I could be wrong) it looked like the collar slipped down on the dog's neck when you were at the corner on your down and back. I would stop and readjust it before returning to the judge as that can cause the dog to run with their head funny.

Can't wait to see the video of you and Hogan in the ring!!! Good luck!

Can't comment on the showing, since I don't do that but the pics are great! Looks like Hogan had a great time with his buddies, and it's nice to see your face.... I know this is a GSP site, but I like putting a face to the screen names!
