Has anyone had a GSP with high blood pressure.  Molly's was noticibly high when she had minor surgery and teeth cleaning two weeks ago and was even higher when we took her in for a recheck today.  Of course she was seriously hyped up and excited today as she loves to go anywhere---even the vets.

I had never heard of high blood pressure in dogs, so I googled it and found this interesting article.

www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/cardiovascular/c_multi_systemic_hypertension

The incidence is pretty low, but still it is good to know about and understand.  You might want to have them check Molly again to be on the safe side.  Did the vet seem concerned or did he think it was just the excitement/stress level causing it?

It was very high today but she had an excitable day. House cleaners were here and she loves them to death---then car ride and vet visit. She does not appear to have any of the signs in the article.

We saw the vet that I do not like today and she ran an EKG when we were told by our usual vet just to recheck her blood pressure when we had the stitches out. Checked on the internet and I am not the only one who does not like the other vet and thinks she tries to run up the charges. We have some pills and will take her back in two weeks to the vet I like.

One thing I did read was to have them check the blood pressure several times while there. One article even mentioned 7 times. I guess like people when they get to the doctor they are apprehensive and the readings are high, but after a while they calm down and get more accurate readings. Hope it is just excitement causing the elevation. In all my years of owning dogs (we will leave it at over 40 years) I never had one with high blood pressure (knock on wood), I ran into pretty much everything else though.

The one thing I have to add is how were they taking the blood pressure? Were they using an automated machine that inflates the cuff and then does a reading or were they manually taking the blood pressure with a doplar? If using an automated machine, there is a lot of inaccuracy in those. When I was in school we were always taught to take at least 3 measurements and take the average (keep in mind that the readings should be somewhat close because if there is a huge variance, then that just goes to show the inaccuracy). The other thing to consider is the cuff size. There are various size cuffs and using an incorrect cuff size can cause the blood pressure to look either high or low depending on the cuff (for the life of me I can't remember which way it trends). Positioning will also cause changes in blood pressure. I would just make sure that the vet is consistent in how they are taking it, what position she is in, and are they just taking her back and getting the reading immediately after you get there so she is at her most excited.

I live in Fort Collins but will be moving to the Denver area after I graduate from UNC. I'd be curious to know who the vet you don't like is so I know not to go to them (although I love love love my vet now, so I may just continue to drive up here). Could you PM me the vet's name? Thanks and good luck!
