Ziggy is over 6 months now. We've been feeding him Eagle Pack Holistic for puppies for a few months now (switched from Innova). Is it about time to switch to adult food? If so, any recommendations? Thanks!

I have always switched mine at 6 months and just picked what I thought was a good adult dog food. In the future though I will probably start my pups on an all life stages dog food having attends some seminars on structure and nutrition.

I switch at 6 months. I spoke with a nutritionist who recommended this. His concern was that the pup has the correct Calcium/Phosphorus levels. However, the adult food I switched him to (Wellness) had the same levels as the puppy food.

I did a lot of digging and checking and decided on an all life type of food. So far so good......

Jen - The discussions in the seminar indicated that the good all life stages dog food have the same calcium/phosphorus proportions. The problems she saw in puppies had to do with the high caloric intake. It caused the bones to grow faster than the tissue around the bones. The pictures she showed were awful. When the puppies were switched to an all life stages the problems all corrected within a week to a month depending on the age of the puppy. It was absolutely amazing. The key apparently is the puppies take in the same amount of calories that they are using. Most puppy foods are very high calorie which is why the problem occurs. In some of the cases the owners switched to the same brand adult food and the problem went away.

I fed Wellness Puppy and then Wellness Adult. There is only a 43 cal difference per cup so not that huge. I think the problem occurs when people overfeed their pups. I kept Max lean so..not an issue. But, in general--I agree totally. I never fed my old dog puppy food.
