I need some advice

Hogan is perfectly fine in himself, up to weight, shiny coat, bright eyes and wet nose.

He is eating fine (probably a bit too much, I don't know whether this may be the problem) on a diet of james wellbeloved puppy kibble and tripe. He has this three times per day at regular times.

He is drinking normally, and eliminating normally.

However, he does have loose movements - inconsistently. It doesn't seem to have a pattern and it has happened since he was little. One day it is solid, the next it is loose.

Anyway, this morning he was sick. It was pale yellow and it happened twice.

This isn't the first time - about 5 or 6 times now he has been sick in the morning (probably spaced two or so weeks apart).

I haven't been to worried because he is still fine in himself, sill eating and drinking, and still eliminating. He is still full of energy and immediately after he is sick, he tries to eat it (!), then carries on as normal.

He is scheduled for a 6 month check up at the vets in 4 weeks. Do you think I should bring it forward, is this something to worry about, what could the reasons be for it?

Thanks is advance.

a few months ago Dax would occasionally alternate between normal/firm and loose poop. He always seemed normal as well, and he seems to have outgrown it now. It was never really runny though...just a little loose. He did get sick twice as a pup though, but it was easy to tell when he wasnt feeling great....he would still play and stuff, but he would take extra long naps...and was fairly content just laying down for most of the day. If he is scheduled for a 6 month check up, then you may want to take a fecal sample just to be sure.

Take a stool sample and have it checked.  It is probably Coccidiosis or Giardia.  Pretty common in pups, but needs treatment.

I have booked him in for a check up later today. The mentioned it could be a low grade coccidiosis or giardia as mentioned above. I will take a stool sample along to get checked.

Not too worried as he is fine in himself but best to get it checked.

awwww hope he's OK.

Tis worth knowing though that it is bug season and dogs very commonly get upset stomachs at this time of the year and just because it's only been a few weeks between vomit episodes doesn't mean it's the same thing. I always withhold food until the next day and if she is still vomiting then I go and see the vet.

I have seen lots of puppies do this cycle with diarrhea. Ringo was notorious with it. Never did figure out what was going on, but he did outgrow it. Also, you may need to cut him back to feeding twice a day. He may just be eating too much. The vomiting in the morning may also be occurring just because he needs to poop. I had that with Halo when she was little. If she didn't go the evening before and I was a little late in putting her out the next morning, she almost always would throw up some liquid with bile (the yellow stuff). She too outgrew the problem.

Definitely check with your vet on the cocci or giardia, but if he is ok there, then it may be one of the things I mentioned.

Both mine went through a phase when they were little of being sick in the mornings (yellow bile - stains carpets nicely). I think it was just having an empty tummy in the morning that did it and they grew out of it. Is it before he eats in the morning? If he's still having three meals a day, it's a long time between evening and morning feeds. I think it improved when we cut down to two meals a day.

Bentley has been through this, and still does it now n then but only occasionally. If he's sick right after eating i just let him eat the sick, it's only his dinner :)

Maybe his body is just not agreeing with his food. Have you tried any other brands? I know for us Dieter was shedding like crazy and had loose stool on one brand so we actually downgraded (according to a few websites) and he is Doing great now. So thats my advice try a few different brands and choose the one he does the best on.

I second dieters thought. Joey is this way too (firm poop then looser afterwards--no puking though)on her innova large breed puppy kibbles. We are switching foods. I know dieter feeds TOTW that I just saw at Tractor supply for $39.99 for the big bag. We are going to try Joey on Orijen first and see if that helps out, if not go with TOTW which is much cheaper.

It seems like I have read a lot of people say that the puppy digestive systems sometimes aren't fine tuned until they are over a year

I went to a seminar this weekend on dog structure and one of the topics was nutrition with puppies. The instructor was Pat Hastings (owner, handler, breeder, judge of multiple breeds and BIS). She showed pictures of puppies with bone issues. She said in all the litters she evaluates (over 35,000 so far) she has seen quite a few issues with bones, not the actual structure and when they change diet within weeks the problems clear up. I asked how they changed the diet and she said they usually just went from the puppy kibble to the adult kibble of the same brand (all life stages). She said the problem was the amount of calories and that she recommends going straight to an all life stages adult food after weaning. I am wondering if this might not be another symptom of too many calories. Just wanted to share this idea with you all. I know after seeing the pictures and talking with her over lunch, I don't intend to ever use a puppy food again.

Not it was the amount of calories and not the protein or vitamins, etc. that caused the problem.

Hi it's Shelley, just to update you guys. Thanks for all the replies.

I took Hogan to the vet just to check everything was ok - had a slight worry maybe he had eaten something he shouldn't and there was a blockage.

Anyway, she checked him over, she said he looks fantastically healthy, he is growing well (he is 5 months on Wednesday and now weighs 19.8kgs.) I told her what I was worried about, she said it could be a low grade bacterial infection and she is sending stool samples off just to be on the safe side.

She said the being sick is nothing to worried about (she laughed when she asked how many times it had happened I replied "uh, about 3 times" "what, in his lifetime?" "urm... yeah...." Paranoid mummy I guess I am!!!!

I do think that lfb you may be right, perhaps it is because he is hungry - he tends to eat around 7/8ish pm then not until 7/8ish am, so I guess a very long time for a little pup.

She has said that really, I shouldn't be worried.... he is perfectly healthy in himself, full of energy (as he leapt around the exam room...) and it is probably a phase he will pass through.

As a precaution she gave me a course of "Canikur Pro" which is a probiotic, it's a short course and she said it should boost the flora in his gut.

I also got to her check in his ears (completely not related) but I've been cleaning them religiously and keeping a very close eye because of all his problems - and she said they were squeaky clean, which is great.

NOw I have a sick puppy! So we wake up this morning and Dieter is usually bugging me for some food but he is still laying down sleeping so I get up and he jumps up looks fine and follows me out to the food bowl. I fill it up and he just stares at it. I say "OK" and he slowly smells it and thats it. If you knew my dog you would find this SHOCKING. So I just leave the bowl there and go on with the day. Besides not eating he is still acting his normal self then around 12pm he walks out and eats his meal. So i think maybe he just had a little tummy ache. OH and his poo was fine in the morning. So then i let him outside around 5pm and his poo was pretty much water and the same thing about an hour later. Then around 7 he ate again but left about a half a cup there...shocking again! So I just keep an eye on him..he still seems fine apart from not eating and diarrhea. He lays down on the floor and goes to sleep. Then I notice him kind of trembling a little bit. He stood up and puked all over the floor...it was mostly gray liquid. Talk about gross. So I eventually get that cleaned up and Dieter is right there with me wagging his tail. He seems fine (probably just the dogs stoic nature) and goes back to sleep only to wake up one more time and puke everywhere. Now im starting to get a little worried..its late now and im going to go to bed and hopefully he will take some food in the morning. The only thing I can think of that he had different was a big "dinosaur bone" he got to chew on yesterday. Hopefully i will be reporting tomorrow with a happy puppy.

05/12/2010 12:22 PM

Just a little update. Last night I noticed red dots and scabs inside the flaps of his ears, similar to chicken pox in a child. Two small lesions were weepy (very small). I then noticed a rash under the skin next to the right of his muzzle, and a similar red rash behind his elbow.

This morning, I then noticed a rash on his belly and around his genitals, some had tips and some were crusty.

He has also started sneezing a lot! (Might not be related but thought I would mention it).

I phoned the vet and they told me to bring him in, although I was slightly reluctant because it cost me £107 on monday, and they always ask you to come in and then charge you £50 for walking through the door! I said I would watch it for a few days, and keep them updated, as he was completely fine in himself in all others ways.

He went in his crate as usual, and Toni got back from work at lunchtime, to find his water and food untouched. He usually eats at least a few mouthfuls.

She let him out in the garden, he had one normal poop then immediately after one that shot out (sorry bit graphic) followed by two more of the same consistency. Whilst he was pooping, he started retching, and proceeding to be sick twice.

She called me at work and said what had happened, she alsoo said that he wasn't himself, he was lethargic, normally he dashes around when we get home, but he was very sedate, his tail was hanging limp and this was not like him at all. I came straight home and he was excited to see me, but not at all himself.

Booked him in at the vets and took him there pretty much straight away, I was very concerned about the not eating and drinking, I guess it's a good job that bonus I got at work that was destined for something else hasn't all been spent so will come in useful

Anyway, when we got there he seemed to perk up a little, but was feeling quite hot to touch and was quieter than normal. She looked him over, his temperature was fine, so were his eyes and membranes were a normal colour.

She looked at the rash and diagnosed it as a skin infection, apparently puppies get it quite often and it is normally secondary to an underlying condition, probable in Hogans case due to his sickness and diarhhoea.

I took some stool samples in so they have now be sent to be tested so we should hear back in a few days.

She said the most likely cause of it could be dietary - so he's eaten something he shouldn't, or he has an allergy in his diet - perhaps the kibble or the tripe- or a bacterial infection (stool testing should identify that).

She said for the next few days, lose the tripe, and add some boiled chicken, keep it as bland as possible, and don't give him any treats.

She's given me a 3 day course of antacid, to settle his stomach, and a course of antibiotics for the skin infection.

We now have to see what comes back from the stool samples. She also gave him a shot of anti-sickness medication.

When she jabbed him, he squealed and shot back. He put one paw on my left shoulder, one on my right, sat up on his haunches and tucked his nose into my neck, closing his eyes. It was the most heartwarming moment ever, the vet thought he was so sweet!

We left the vets room, and he went over to a water bowl and drank a lot - I wonder if the anti sickness med had started to take effect - it went straight into a vein - but I was just glad he started drinking.

We all went back to the office and he slept by my desk for the last few hours of work. He is now asleep, he clearly still feels under the weather so he is having a lot of pampering.

Sorry to bore you with such a long post!!!!!!!!

Watch this space for results, I really hope he starts to improve soon.

Poor puppers! It is so worrying when they are young.

(As an aside, I have a bad case of bug bites on my back -- not that I knew that's what it was -- and it took me 4 days to go see the doc, whereas Bo would have been at the vet's in 15 minutes with a similar ailment.)

Give Hogan lots of love!
