What an interesting thread.

We don't have dog parks over here but even if we did, I wouldn't go.

I'm very, very careful when I am out and about with Hogan. If I see a dog in the distance Hogan is on a lead until we either have passed them, or we have met them, and I am sure they are friendly. Recall is good, but he is only 5 months, and will run straight up to a strange dog if I allowed.

This method failed me a few weeks back when a strange dog ran up to us and attacked Hogan. The owner was arrogant and didn't care. I reported him to the dog warden, with pictures, but nothing has come of it, which is disgusting.

Luckily, Hogan is a happy chappy, he has met many dogs since and is perfectly fine. He wants to be friends with everybody.

I worked very hard to socialise him properly and hate the fact that irresponsible owners don't bother and the others have to suffer!

I totally agree with you Shelley! I don't go to dog parks, but I do walk the dogs in all sorts of different places & hate it when people who have no control over their dogs let them go off-leash. If your dog doesn't have a perfect recall (or doesn't listen to the owner AT ALL) then you have no business walking it in a public place without a leash.

The most common excuse is "Oh, he/she is great with other dogs." ...that's not only not always true, but how do they know that my restrained dogs are the same way?

Grrrr... ;) :)

The public dog park we used to go to was interesting...some people really cared while others just kinda dropped off their dogs while they talked for an hour, not even paying attention. I found a new private dog park and its much different. Just about everyone watches their dogs constantly. There are a few dogs though that people avoid, but the good thing about this park is there are like 5 fenced fields for the dogs. We mostly go to use the pond (although we have plenty of other water places to play), agility equiptment, and play with some of the dogs that we know. Im not sure if Ill renew the membership next year, but for this year were gonna keep going.

-One more side note about owners that dont care...we walk at a huge trail (over 20 miles long) and theres a guy with a boxer, that he walks off leash. The man is really nice, but he doesnt do much to control his dog. His dog immediatly targets other dogs and puts on a crazy dominace display by putting hackles up, kicking dirt and rocks, etc... The other day he actually came at Dax, luckily Dax always handles himself appropriately, and submitted and I got the other dog well away from him. I dont care if I get bit...no one elses dog is going to attack my dog, I dont mess around with that and I will put myself in the way (okay, I wouldnt if it was a crazy fight...but a dog just being overly assertive and aggressive I will correct anytime. If their owner wont, I will, if he is behaving that way with my dog). All the guys says is "Oh, yeah he always has to be the boss. He always needs to be in charge"!

Its one thing having a dog that lets others know that they are in charge...but not like this, and especially not to a dog that was showing no signs of wanting to be dominant. Some people are just stupid and irresponsible with their dogs.
