My pair go ballistic (esp. the female) when other dogs are walked down the sidewalk in front of our house.  This applies if they're in the house or out in the back yard and see the other dog through the side railing fence.  But if I have them on leash out in front, in the yard, they don't react at all if someone walks a dog past us.    Why is it okay for another dog to walk down "our" sidewalk when they're out there, but not when they're in the house or back yard?

Who knows.  Dogs are weird.

I guess they feel more territorial and/or protective.

I have no idea, but I know my female springer, Sienna, used to go nuts when the neighbors dog, Satin, would get loose and run along the fence perimeter, she wanted to rip her apart. Yet they'd meet in the front yard face to face and be fine!

Maybe when they are not on leash, they don't know if they are friendly dogs or not, but when you have them on leash they trust you to know that the other dogs are friendly, and therefore they don't need to react.
