Just to clarify. All the photos shown make it very clear to me that the dock job was poor. Pixie - we've had a few solid liver tails in our litters and we have never had a bald nub. Same goes with all colors - ticked and white too. My vet takes a lot of pride in the method he uses to dock and it shows. He cuts the top side of the tail (think when the dog is standing up) a little longer than the bottom, creating a beveled edge. Then he pulls the skin with hair on it around the end and puts a stitch or two in on the underside of the tail. Produces a beautiful tail every time.

Jean - I think that is the same way my vet does tails. You did a better job of describing it though.

Yes, that is how my vet did my singleton boy, Price's, tail, nine years ago. You cannot see the skin. It is beautifully done.

It's possible the exposed tips could be poor docking. One reason we were doing our own is b/c we couldn't find a vet who ever docked a tail on a 2 day old pup. It probably depends on the individual dog, but when the hair grows long and over the tip it looks good. Both my dogs have a tuft of hair past the actual tip.
I think it looks very natural, they do not have a nub under the hair.

Gunner is solid liver and has a bald spot ont he top of his tail. I also think it was from a not so good docking of the tail. It has been that way since we got him at 3 yo and is still like that today at 5-1/2. Vet seems to think it is becasue of the way he sits  or lays and it rubs it off. there is stubble on it it just doesn't get long enough to call hair

I have a liver gsp and I cannot find a bald spot either. Just picked up a second and her white tail is fully "haired"
