Ok so for bout ehh, give or a take a day or to, a week now Beau has gotten some bumps on the back of his neck and then they went away, and with how much running he does, and the stuff he runs through i figured he just got poked by a couple twigs and they will go away. Well now he has about 30 on this back and they aren't big at all and they seem to be going away. It could be that he just ran into a bush or something, and he shows no other signs of problems, eats fine, runs fine, drinks fine, etc... Im thinking it may be an allergic reaction to a plant of some kind? Anyone else have an idea? there to small to see, and have no coloration on the skin, but I can feel them.hes got one or 2 on his side as well. Could it be a summertime allergy to a shampoo?

I'm wondering if it's hives. If you're using shampoo regularly, I'd back off it and see if it goes away. If not, time to look for other causes.

FWIW I don't like to shampoo my dogs more than once or twice a year. If they're dirty, they usually just get hosed off... it normally gets rid of the smell and the grit without stripping oil from their coat. One of the wonderful things about GSPs is how easy they are to keep clean!

Hes been smelling pretty ripe latly and my family(mainly my dad) are pretty much threating me to wash him. So I have used it a few times. But he has always got a bath monthly at the least. Just something that has to happen. Kind of over excessive cleaners here. Where would he get hives from? Hasn't been around anything un normal.

Justin,

Sounds like insect bites to me. Now that it is summer up here Juno seems to be covered with little bumps all of the time after he has been outside, especially in the evening. They kinda make the hair around them stand up a bit but they are always gone within a day. Around here they are mosquitos most often, black flies, and yes ants.....the ants like to go for the "crotch" area. We worried about all of these bites at first but they don't seem to bother him so we've stopped worrying so much.

He used to get a real rash in the same "crotch" area, when he was a puppy (we think either from running through the long grass or the dog food he was on). This rash seems to stick around for way longer and was more an overall red bumpy, rough area. The vet said to give him benedryl if it was bugging him of if he was scratching it but he really never seemed bothered by it. Sometimes I just think that these guy's are tough dogs and just don't feel anything.

Good luck.

Miracle's going thru that now too, I scrubbed her down good, with medicated shampoo and frontlined her again, and gave her benedryl for a few days and they are going away. Probably allergic reaction to grasses while I'm running her in a nearby parkway.... Maggie used to get them so bad from grasses, that she would have bleeding hives...That girl gets benedryl every AM of her life for allergies.

Justin- I forgot, your boy isn't neutered is he? Some of those intact males have pee that's stinky almost to the point of being skunky, and even if they're housed 'cleanly' they'll carry the aroma with them. The boy's tendency to sprinkle when they tinkle probably doesn't help.

I talked about this with my mushing mentor who's had up to 50 dogs at her place over 30 years... she said the ordor-factor seems to vary by the individual dog despite diet, definately seems to be worse in the males, and neutering can help- although some are still just more skunky than others.

Yea he is un-neutered. However, Im afraid that he would be getting a bath atleast once or twice a month regardless. =/ Weird family.

Little update. The bumps are further to being gone, however it looks like it took some of the hair with them. Kinda little holes you can only see in a certain light. I was messing with the bumps a little but I dont think I took the hair out.

One of my girls gets this on her head - some type of hives - I usually give her benedryl and they clear up in a few days.

It did seem to start on the back of the neck. After you gave the benedryl did the hari seem to grow back ok? Or was that not a problem for you?

Mine has a bald spot on his lips to, his hair is thin and I figured he just rubbed it off in the field.

I been hearing from ALOT of my adopters about bumps and lumps, and we all think it's allergic reaction to grasses. Benedryl seems to help all thus far. AND keeping them outta the tall grasses. Easier said then done. I'm even itchy just thinking about it!

His hair was always pretty thin on his back. You cant see his skin. its just thin. I don't think its a food allergy as he has been doing great on this food for about a year now. I'm going into the vet soon and ill metion it to him when I get there. Benedryl and time seem to be helping. Probly just ant bites.

Justin,
does it look anything at all like it could be fungal?
Thin hair on his back is totally unrelated and that does sound like a food allergy.
Bathing that often should not affect your dog's coat at all.
Our guy is in lakes and ponds several times a week and gets a bath every 3rd day because of it.
Please keep us updated.

My oldest started getting bumps on her head and neck and I thought it was ant bites. Gave her a benadryl and it seemed to help the itching. After a couple of days she was still getting bumps and I even started to see them some on her back and side. The original bumps seemed to be getting better. I scoured our yard for ants and couldn't find any, so I finally took her to the vet. The vet took one look and was pretty sure it was a skin staph infection. I asked her how she could have gotten that and she said it could have come from anything as the dogs carry the staph germ all the time on their coat. All it takes is a little skin irritation or allergy and it can progress to staph. Anyway the vet did a scrapping and confirmed the infection under a microscope. We sent home with a medicated shampoo and antibiotics. I bathed the bumpy areas every other day for about an week and gave her the antibiotics for 14 days. The bumps cleared right up and have come back. So, you might want to get a vet to confirm it isn't a staph skin infection as, according to my vet, that would not likely clear up on it's own.
