So I currently have a 10 month old GSP Randi.  We were presented with the oppertunity (yesterday) to rescue a 12 week old GSP for free from a vet (tomorrow).

The owner brought it in because it had been really sick.  Turns out the poor little girl has Parvo!  The owners wanted to put her down because they couldn't afford the treatment but but my neighbor who works there convinced the owners to surrender her and then convinced the vet to treat the puppy for free and she knew someone that she was pretty sure would take her and care for her.....me.

So I went down to check her out and fell in love with her! She's adorable!

She's been on IV's for 3 days and has been keeping food down.  They want to keep her through tomorrow just to keep the IV in a little longer but she's back in puppy mode and the vet said she's going to be fine.

So...here's my questions.....

I've done some reading online to learn more and it sounds pretty serious.  I'm curious if anyone has had long term effects on their dogs.  The websites I've seen said it's a life long battle while discussion forums have people saying that there isn't always long term effects and iff they beat it they're good most of the time.

I'm also concerned about my 10 month old getting it even though she's been vaccinated.  The vet told us she'd be fine.

I'm not really trusting with my dogs to just anyone and this vet isn't MY vet though I'm sure she knows her stuff.

Any advise? Here is a photo of the little girl who my husband wants to name Frankie.  We do boy names for the girls.

Hi I have first hand experience with Parvo. Back in 1978(before they even had a name for it,) my brother had a Rottweiller who contracted it. "Max" was around 11 weeks old. We thought we were going to lose him he was soo soo sick. My brother was very lucky in that he had an excellent vet in So. Cal who pulled him through it. He never had any complications from the disease afterwards. He remained a very healthy dog until he passed away at the age of 10 of cancer. I would say go for it!!! The pup is adorable. Hope this helps.

In 1996, my new German Shorthared puppy Kaiser was diagnosed with Parvo. Kaiser had already had a parvo vaccination and per the vet should have still had his immunity from his mother. Kaiser was the replacement for my 8 year old Cocker who had to be put down from lymphatic cancer. I told the vet to do whatever he had to do, money was no object, since I couldn't bear to loose another dog so soon.

Kaiser was in the hospital for 4 days, and I seem to remember that the treatment was less than $500.00 at the time. Kaiser was weak for about a month thereafter. He was very thin, and was always chilled, so he wore a sweater for a month. I remember giving him a scoop of icecream each night to help fatten him up.

The vet said that he would have no lasting effects from the Parvo. Having Parvo, the dog then has life-long acqired immunity from Parvo. After his recovery, Kaiser had an uneventful puppyhood. Kaiser turned out to be the best behaved, smartest, best all-around dog that we ever had. Kaiser had a very healthy life, and gave us many years of unconditional love. He lived almost 14 years, passing away quietly in his sleep this past February.

I hope you will give this pup a second chance, and in turn, you will get years of love and companionship.

My grand dad had greyhounds when I was growing up. One of his pups contracted parvo and was very sick, but the vets were able to pull her through. She too went on to live a very normal life with no problems. Good luck with Frankie!!

My friend has a lab that had parvo, and he pulled through fine and is a nice loving healthy dog.  I do know the virus hangs around for a while in the area where the dog was infected (the previous owners home), I would not worry and get the pup.

Thanks so much for the info! The web pages I read just made it sound like it was going to be a forever thing and I just didn't know if we were ready for that especially since we're dealing with vet bill right now for Randi (she's been having problems with one of her eyes).

We weren't planning on getting another pup for at least a year from now, but Randi wasn't planned either. I guess things just work out that way. We are picking up Frankie today and can't wait to take her home!

Gatermom - so sorry to hear about Kaiser.

Well, I'm sure this will be controversial but.... Since the vet was talked into treating that beautiful gsp puppy for parvo for free, why not get her back to the original owners? I haven't read anything that said the original owers were bad, just not rich.

That is a nice thought to give her back but... my concerns would be if they could not afford the care the first time what happens next time the dog gets sick?

Congrats on your new addition - she is adorable :-)

I would love to think that the family that surrendered her would be able to take her back and care for her, but they took off without providing any information and havn't called to check on her at all. As mentioned above, maybe they jumpped into it too fast before thinking about how much a puppy can cost. She has had no vaccinations yet at all so we're just getting started on forking out the cash. We all know how expensive that 1st year is.

PS.....we wanted to pick her up yesterday and now the vet wants US to pay for the treatment she recieved while in his care. My husband is not keen on this at all since we decided to take her in only because she was going to be free. We're currently trying to work something out with him to maybe pay only a portion of it. I have such a soft heart I'm already sold and would pay it, but it isn't just up to me. We should be able to find out by the end of the day if everything is going to work out. Keep your fingers crossed!!!

What a beautiful girl. I hope you keep since you seem willing to commit to this pup while others haven't.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts on the Parvo. It really helped us in deciding what to do.

We went into the vet yesterday and agreed to pay for part of the treatment they provided to her.  AND SHE'S ALL OURS!!

We brought her home last night. All her stools are already solid and she has a crazy apatite! It's like nothing was wrong with her at all!

So now the crate training beings. It was a LONG night last night.  We also need to come up with a name for the little thing.  The hubby wants Frankie but I think it's too close to Randi with then ending. I love Taylor or Reese but he hasn't bought it yet.

Again, thanks to all of you! We may not have decided to take her in if it hadn't been for you! I'll get some pictures up soon. My camera was dead yesterday....of course.

She is now named Stella. I have some pictures posted in another forum if you want to go check her out. She's already looking way better than she was on Saturday!
