My GSP is about 45lbs now and I was wondering when you started your dog on Adult food? He is about 2 weeks away from 8 months old. thanks |

| What is the advantage of starting your dog on adult food at 6 months? Why wouldnt you keep him on puppy food until 1 yr? |

| Since ours were fed a whole life food, I can't speak to the use of puppy food. |

| First, there is not a whole lot of difference between what I feed when a puppy and what I feed as an adult. Second, I have three shorthairs and it is bad enough to have to feed a puppy lunch when the other two are looking on, but to also feed different things is a pain. So, I move my pups off of puppy food as soon as seems reasonable for them. Usually the puppy food isn't sticking to their ribs quite as good, so I move them to adult food and they do better. The only reason I start mine on a puppy food (I use Innova puppy) is they have always done well on it and it is easy to soak and soften up the kibble. |

| Oh man Bev, I feel your pain when you had to feed 2 diff. foods. Over here its crazy. My sisters puppies have food alergies so theyre on a high quality kibble, my parents feed maddy and mylee a different food, and I feed Dax a different food yet (I give him what he was weaned off of as a puppy). We have 5 dogs here fairly often and everyone wants everyone elses food. Its interesting to say the least. (and everyone wants Dax's puppy food.....except for him, He wants maddy and mylees food cause my mom mixes it with wet food haha) |

I have never fed puppy food. The food I feed is all stages. |

| What I don't understand is in the wild, are puppies fed a different food to their parents? Do the parents hunt down food for the pups that has more protein in it etc? Why do we, as humans, feel that we have to give puppies a special diet different to what they are genetically used to? Hmmm curious!? |

That is a good point! I had Blitz on a puppy food, but he has a sensitive stomach and the food that worked for him was an all stages...Now the Diamond food I think is all stages cuz it gives feeding guides for pups and adults... |

Surely because in the wild, they take what they are given, and live with the consequences of it. Surely if we interfere with the natural diet, we provide the best possible level of nutrients of the age of the pup? |

| The only reason I use puppy food is the size of the kibble and the fact that is softens with water easier than the adult kibble I feed. Other than that the puppy kibble I feed is very similar to the adult food I feed. I do, however, agree with Shelley, and I hope that what we feed is a better quality and more consistently better quality than if they were hunting on their own. |

We do feed two types between the 6 dogs. We put the puppies on one of the types at weaning (e.g. no puppy food -- went to adult). |

Yea I was under the impression the main difference between puppy and adult food is kibble size. Joey eats innova large breed puppy. She'd 8 months now, so maybe we should move her up when the next monster bag gets emptied. Bev--- do you use innova large breed adult after that? We are happy with the innova line. Our cat gets innova cat dry kibbles too and she loves them. |

| JoeyBean - I did use Innova Large Breed for a while and was very happy with it. The only reason I changed is a friend who is developing a line of dog food asked if I would test his high performance kibble. He gave me the food for free while I was testing it. I liked it so much and it was cheaper than Innova I have stuck with it. It isn't on the market yet, but he still gets me bags of food. If I ever had to change again, I would go back to the Innova Large Breed. |

I have had my dog on Innova EVO since about 6 months. She is 18 months at present doing greast, lots of enregy and coat is sparkling. The fish variety has small kibble which worked good for the switch, though it does smell quite a bit like fish which may cause some issues. |
